1st Place in Nature
“The Fungal Con Artist”
This mysterious flower
imposter is actually a fungus!
Carefully excavated from a
colonized blueberry fruit is the
intact ‘angel-wing’ structure of
the mummy berry pathogenMonilinia vaccinii-corymbosi.
The shape and size of each
‘petal’ of this flower like
structure is delineated by the
locules in the fruit. The
structure is itself held together
by the seeds and placenta
(brown) in the center of the
fruit.
