• No possession with pass in the air (Rule 4-5-7 & Note)
– Dead-ball foul committed between periods

FACEOFF REQUIREMENTS/CHECKLIST :
Players face the goal they are attacking
All faceoffs are right-handed – no left handed stance
Crosses must be within the 4 inch center line
Players must get into faceoff position at same time, no
delays – advantage for player delaying
Gloves on the ground and crosse in gloves
Crosses parallel to each other and not touching the ball
Heads must match evenly
Players can’t have hands on strings or throat of crosse
Players feet may not touch the crosse
Both hands and feet must be to the left of the throat
Legal to lean over the center line
Faceoffs - continued
• Positions of other players :
– Must be onside – 4&3 in each defensive area
• Must stay in Zone 1 until possession is declared, ball crosses Zone 1, or ball
re-started on violation or foul
– One player in each wing – can’t have 2 players of same team in one
wing area
– Man-down faceoff :
• Team playing man-down may bring player up to wing area but they must
•
•
stay onsides – “Hot” call – mechanics change for off-official - move up on
wing line and watch the hot player
Player in penalty area may enter the field before possession gained if the
wing area is vacant at faceoff (Rule 4-4-3)
Player in penalty area may not enter field until possession gained if wing is
occupied
• Faceoff violations :
– Movement after set and before whistle blown
– Backing out or standing up after sticks placed on ground
– Faceoff restrictions still in effect – player must remain behind defensive
area until re-start
– Illegal faceoff position
Faceoff Mechanics
• Faceoff official :
• Best advice – get them down quick and get them up quick
– Longer = more violations
• Never adjust players stick – tell them once then take the ball away
• Straddle the ball to prevent problems and while waiting for partner to get
•
ready (look for ready signal from partner)
R takes 1st faceoff of game – instruct the players what you expect
•
•
•
•
Go through checklist – requirements from previous page
Stand about 5 feet back
Down-Set-Whistle
After whistle back away towards your goal and sideline
– Make note of numbers, give same instructions to “second” set of faceoff middies
– Concentrate on faceoff and signal possession when gained
– Make sure possession is gained before winding – don’t want more than 6 players
fighting for loose ball
• After possession – lead get to goal line, trail watch substitutes and offsides
• Begin 10 second count when A crosses mid-field
• Turn on beeper if team with ball is in defensive half of field.
Faceoff Mechanics
• Off-official :
• Turn on beeper when partner shows the ball
• Position on end of wing line
– Man-down face – move closer to mid-field
– Know which player(s) are hot – communicate to stay onside
• Count all players – make sure the number is right
– Wait signal – hand over head
– Ready signal – point to goal you will cover
• During faceoff :
–
–
–
–
–
–
Watch butt ends of sticks, make sure they are not lifted
Watch wing area briefly, no stepping over the line before whistle
Watch wing players crashing in on loose ball scrum
Be prepared to cover defensive area line
Signal possession when gained
Counts – 10 seconds if in lead, turn on beeper again if trail and team is
clearing
– Cover goal line for your goal
Plays
• At the end of the 2nd quarter, A is in possession in a man-up situation, 30

seconds to go in foul. B1 slashes A5 with :10, flag-down. A keeps
possession and half ends. As the foul is being communicated to the table
area before half, A1 taunts B1.
Ruling – B1 serves 1 minute slashing foul, A1 unsportsmanlike conduct foul,
1 minute non-releasable. B awarded ball at center. Note - these are not
simultaneous fouls.
A1 has possession in offensive area and B1 commits penalty, flag down, Ball
becomes loose before quarter ends.
Ruling – B1 serves either technical or personal foul, A awarded ball at same
relative position at other end of field.
After faceoff, the ball goes OB between the defensive area lines. In a) the
officials do not know who directed it, b) A2 touched it last, and c) an
inadvertent whistle blows.
Ruling a) re-face, b) ball awarded to team B, c) ball awarded according to
alternate possession rules.
On a faceoff a loose ball approaches the goal area, B4, a long stick in the
defensive area a) steps outside the box to play the loose ball, or b) is
pushed by A8 outside the defensive area.
Ruling – in both a + b - play-on, a) if A gains possession play-on is over and
continue. b) technical foul push on A8, if B gains possession play-on is over
and play continues. If technical foul assessed, players must be placed in
correct spots before re-start.
Plays
• Faceoff – play begins and it’s a 3 on 3 scrimmage for the ball. In a)
B1 steps on or kicks an opponents stick. b) off-official believes A8
left the wing area before the whistle was blown.
• Ruling a) illegal procedure on B1, play-on, if still loose award ball to
team A. b) illegal procedure on A8, play-on, will probably be blown
dead due to the distance and time from wing area to the middle of
field. In both a & b all players are restricted to their areas until the
restart.
• Man-down faceoff. Team A has 5 seconds to go with A2 serving a
penalty. In a) A5 comes out of the defensive area and occupies the
wing area. b) team leaves the wing area vacant. What are the rule
implications ?
• Ruling – a) A5 must stay onsides at all times, the player serving the
foul must wait to enter the field until the ball is possessed. b) A2
may enter the field when penalty time expires whether or not the
ball is possessed.
Mechanics – off-official moves up on the wing
line and watches A5 to make sure he stays onsides, while also
watching the scrimmage.
