Keeping Your Laptop Safe
 Tips for laptop safety
 Take your laptop home during breaks.
 Use a Laptop Lock!! (available at the WSU Book Store)
 Do not leave in car.
If necessary put in trunk.
 Stolen laptop procedure:
 Bring a police report to the Technical Support Center,
Somsen 207.
 You will have to fill out a ‘Notice of Loss’ form before
you can receive a replacement laptop.
 $500 insurance deductible
 Check your homeowner’s insurance policy to see if it will
cover the deductible amount.
Care of Your Laptop
 Use a damp cloth or a mild window cleaner to clean
the laptop screen.
 Never spray anything directly onto the screen.
 Do not put stickers on your laptop.
• Removal of sticker residue can be up to a $50 charge.
 Do not set items on your laptop.
 Do not put your laptop in a bag when turned on.
• Overheating can occur when fans get blocked.
 Keep liquids away from your laptop!!
• If a spill happens, shut off computer right away, unplug
your computer, pour out the liquid, wipe it off, and
bring to Somsen 207 immediately!

settings.

anywhere between 1 and 4.5 hours
of battery life.
 To change power option click on
the battery icon next to the clock in
the lower right and select “power
saver”.

Personalization Script
 Click on the window to activate it, Press ‘W’ (W for Winona) and hit
enter then wait for a Username prompt.
Type in your username and then click ok.
Network Resources
 Connecting to the WSU network gives you access to:
 The Internet
 Your e-mail – 100 MB
 Your personal network storage space - 200 MB
 Studentwebs.winona.edu – 100 MB
Your personal web pages
 Studentclubs.winona.edu – 100 MB
 Network printing
 Class storage
On-Campus Networking
You are able to connect to the network from almost
anywhere on campus:
Ethernet Ports
 Library
 Residence Halls
 Study Areas
 Laptop Classrooms
 Computer Labs
Wireless Network
 Access Points are in every building with classrooms.
 A wireless network card is already installed in your laptop.
Off Campus Networking
 When connecting to your home network—do not
change the computer’s name or domain.
 If the network settings are changed—you will not be
able to login to your laptop.
 When setting up another dial-up connection – create a
new connection.
Username/Password Info
Username and password are on the paper that was given
to you with your laptop.
 If you have changed your password over the summer you
will need to use that one.
When do you need to use your username and password?

 You have ONE username and password for all of these
accounts!
 Password must be a minimum of 8 characters.
 Password must be changed every 180 days – check email.
Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to login
For this first login, your username needs to be entered as
winona\Username. You will not need to do this for future
logins.

 WSU Wireless Security
You should use the “Connect To” option to
setup any other wireless connections on your
laptop.
 Students cannot get wireless access from
Winona State when they are at home but can
easily connect to their home wireless if it is set
up.
 Personal wireless access points on campus are
strictly prohibited. If one is found the RA will
confiscate it.
Make sure you see this!

Laptop Agreement
 Let’s Review
1. Will I be charged if I have a lost or stolen laptop?
 YES – there is a $500 deductible that you are
responsible for.
2. If I am graduating or transferring when should I return
the laptop?
 If you are graduating, transferring, or withdrawing
you must return the laptop within 5 days of the last
class attended.
3. If I return the laptop next week because I have decided
not to attend WSU, will I be charged?
 YES – there is a $50 fee for returning the laptop.

 You can also access e-mail

Virus Protection
 Forefront actively protects your laptop from virus threats by
running in the background when your computer is on.
 What to do if you suspect that your machine is infected with a
virus:
 Perform a scan using Microsoft Forefront.
First perform a quick scan.
Then, if nothing is found and problems persist, perform
a full scan.
If virus is found - Click on REMOVE RISK.
 For more information on viruses you can contact the Digital
Learning Center.
Printing
 Printing
 1,000 page per Semester printing limit on black and white
printing on campus!
95% of students printed less then 1,000 pages last semester
under unlimited printing.
 Fee for color printing at TSC.
 Please, always click on “Print Preview” before you print!
Make sure that you know what your print job will look like on
the screen before actually sending it to the printer.
 Send a print job only once. Since your job is sent to a print queue
shared by other users, your document may take several minutes to
print.
 Let’s show you how to add a printer.
File Management:
Difference Between C, D, and R Drives
The C:\ drive is on the hard drive of your laptop.
This Is where all your programs are located when installed.
If your laptop crashes this will be lost. WSU can restore
your C:\ drive to default settings at request.
The D:\Data drive is on the hard drive of your laptop.
This needs to be backed up by you!
If your laptop crashes this will be lost unless YOU have
backed the files up to CDs/DVDs, an external HDD, or flash
drive.
The R:\Student Store drive is on the WSU Network.
This is backed up regularly by WSU tech support and can be
accessed from any laptop that is connected to the WSU
network.
Laptop Carry Case Vouchers
 Each new student will be given a laptop carrying case voucher .
 This voucher will cover the cost of a basic case from the WSU
Book Store.
 This voucher is worth $15.00 toward the purchase of a bag.
 Before the voucher can be used, it needs to have the following:
 TSC stamp
 Initials by TSC Employee
 Warrior ID
Somsen 207 Walk-In
 Welcome Desk, Walk-In Staff, and STARS are ready to help
you with any laptop issues.
 You will be asked for your Warrior ID number along with a
description of the problem that you are having with your
laptop.
 You will be directed to our waiting area. A Walk-in
Technician will come and assist you shortly.
 Our WSU Walk-in Technicians are trained to figure out and
solve your laptop issues.
 Also available in Lourdes for West Campus students!
 Our DLC STARS are ready to help you with your Technology
Questions.
 You can call WSU Phone Support at 457-5240 to request
an appointment for assistance with any of your
technology needs.
 A STAR will contact you to setup a time that is convenient
for both of you for one-on-one help.
 Walk-ins are accepted depending on STARS’ availability.

How does this work?
 With a subscription software is loaded on the laptop
 Software cannot be deleted
 Software reports the location of stolen laptop

Shutting down
This time only: when
shutting down, Click the
arrow in the bottom right
corner of the start menu
and choose “Shut Down”.
This will avoid installing
updates now.
Note: You do eventually
want to run these
updates.
