REPEATING AND GROWING PATTERNS

WHAT IS A REPEATING PATTERN?

Definition:

The same grouping over and over.

  

The pattern never changes.

The pattern can have` long or short units.

The pattern can include any items such as…

 numbers, shapes, or colors.

REPEATING NUMBER PATTERNS

Repeating patterns can be number patterns.

They can have as little as one number.

 Example: 1 1 1 1 1 

They can have many numbers.

 Example: 1 2 3 4 5 1 2 3 4 5 1 2 3 4

REPEATING SHAPE PATTERN

They can consist of one shape in a unit.

 Example: 

They can contain many shapes in a unit.

 Example:

REPEATING COLOR PATTERNS

Repeating patterns can be color patterns.

The same color sequence repeats itself as a unit.

Examples:

Definition:

A pattern that increases with every new unit by adding something to the

   

Can occur anywhere:

GROWING NUMBER PATTERN In growing number patterns:

A new number is added to the previously existing unit.

 Example:  1 1 2 1 2 3 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 5 unit unit unit

GROWING SHAPE PATTERN In growing shape patterns:

A new shape is added every unit.

 

Shapes can be harder than numbers.

Example: unit unit

GROWING COLOR PATTERN In growing color patterns:

A new color is added to every unit.

 Example: unit unit unit

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN REPEATING AND GROWING PATTERN

Repeating:

 Unit repeats and remains the same.

 Never add anything to the pattern.

Growing:

 Unit changes every time it repeats.

 Adding something to the previous unit.
