Progress and Goals
Goals of HerpNET
• Produce a distributed database among 36
museums in North America
• Use DiGIR protocol
• Georeference all N/S American localities in these
collections and make them available through these
distributed databases
• Establish a consistent methodology of
georeferencing, including error calculation
Progress to Date
Publishing Website (www.herpnet.org)
Establishing Listserv to facilitate communication between
institutions
Gathering all collection data from 36 institutions
Start of georeferencing at Year 1 institutions
Establishing prototype gazetteer of all unique localities*
*Note: Due to some technical and staffing problems, along with delays in
obtaining collection data, the projected new date for the finished gazetteer
is January 31, 2004.

Georeferencing Rates on average
US localities=~10-20 per hour
1000 localities = 67 hours
Foreign localities = ~4 per hour
1000 localities = 250 hours
Next Steps:
Make production gazetteer public
(projected date is Jan 31, 2004)
Institutions download rest of claimed data and
georeference those localities
Set up servers at institutions soon? (e.g. core
institutions with available computer personnel)
Make kernel of country data available (e.g. Belize,
Honduras, El Salvador)
Set up filters at institutions with servers
