7.5 Division Properties of Exponents
Essential Question:
How do you use the division properties of
exponents?
Main Idea
• We will learn more about how to simplify
exponential expressions.
• These exponential expressions are written as
fractions and may include negative exponents.
• You must be careful in this lesson by paying
close attention to all the exponents and the
small negative signs.
EX 1 Finding Quotients of Powers
Quotient of Powers Property
• Divide Powers: If the bases are the same,
subtract the exponents.
Practice 1
Ex 4 Finding Positive Powers of Quotients
Positive Power of a Quotient
• Raising a Quotient to a Power: if it looks like a
fraction with parentheses, distribute the
outside power to the top and bottom.
Practice 4
Negative Power of a Quotient Property
• Raising a Negative Power: if it is a fraction
with a negative power, use the reciprocal,
then distribute the positive outside power to
the top and bottom.
Ex 5 Finding Negative Powers of Quotients
Review
• When finding the quotient of two powers with
the same base, what operation do you do to
the exponents?
• When you have a fraction raised to a positive
power, what do you do with the exponent?
• When you have a fraction raised to a negative
power, what do you do to write it as a fraction
with a positive exponent?
Summary
• Answer the essential question in detailed,
complete sentences.
