Implementing Windows 8
• The first step in installing Windows 8 on a computer is to
ensure that the hardware and software being run on the
computer will be compatible with Windows 8.
• As a part of preparing for the Windows 8 installation process,
you need to understand minimum hardware requirements and
understand the supported upgrade paths.

Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster
RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)
Hard disk space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver
Additional requirements to use certain features:
To use touch, you need a tablet or a monitor that supports multitouch
To access the Windows Store and to download and run apps, you need an
active Internet connection and a screen resolution of at least 1024 x 768
• To snap apps, you need a screen resolution of at least 1366 x 768
• Client Hyper-V requires a 64-bit system with second level address
translation 2 GB of RAM (Windows 8 Pro only)
• A TV tuner is required to play and record live TV in Windows Media Center
(Windows 8 Pro Pack and Windows 8 Media Center Pack only)
Upgrading
Current OS (Operating System):
Retained Features:
Windows XP
user accounts and files
Windows Vista
windows settings, user accounts, and files
Windows 7
programs, windows settings, user
accounts, and files
Windows 8 RP (Release Preview)
Nothing is carried over (Files are saved in
a folder called Windows.old)
Windows 8 DP (Developers Preview)
Nothing is carried over (Files are saved in
a folder called Windows.old)
Improved deployment
and migration features
Client Hyper-V
Note: This requires the Windows 8 Enterprise or Windows 8 Pro
version of the operating system.
• Client Hyper-V® on Windows 8 provides a flexible and highperforming client virtualization environment.
• Users can take advantage of this environment to test
applications and IT scenarios in multiple operating system
configurations by using a single computer
Client Hyper-V (requirements)
• 64-bit PCs only. Like the Server software on which it is based,
Client Hyper-V only runs on 64-bit PCs that are running the 64bit version of Windows 8 Pro (or Enterprise).
• Chipset requirements. Client Hyper-V requires modern Intel
and AMD microprocessors that include Second Level Address
Translation (SLAT) technologies. Fortunately, this is a feature of
all current generation (“Sandy Bridge” on Intel) microprocessors.
But it means that your older Core 2 Duo-based PCs may not
work.
• Memory. Your PC must be configured with at least 4 GB of
RAM. (More memory depending on virtualization needs)
Client Hyper-V (installation)
Server Hyper-V (requirements)
Processor : Minimum: 1.4 GHz 64-bit processor
RAM: Minimum: 512 MB
Disk Space: Minimum: 32 GB
Windows Server 2012 Datacenter – unlimited virtual instances
on local hardware
Windows Server 2012 Standard – two virtual instances on local
hardware
Windows Server 2012 Essentials – no virtualization support
Windows Server 2012 Foundation – no virtualization support
Server Hyper-V (installation)

Hyper-V
PVLANs allow Hyper-V administrators to isolate virtual machines from each
other (for example, virtual machines cannot contact other virtual machines
over the network), while still maintaining external network connectivity for all
virtual machines.
DHCP guard
• DHCP guard drops server messages from unauthorized virtual machines
that are acting as DHCP servers
• DHCP server traffic from other virtual switch ports is automatically
dropped.
Router guard
• Router guard drops router advertisement and redirection messages from
unauthorized virtual machines that are acting as routers.
