Born in New York City in 1950 to parents from the Dominican Republic.

Born in New York City in 1950 to parents from the Dominican Republic.
 Shortly after her birth, Julia and her family moved to the Dominican
Republic.
 Because her father was involved in an unsuccessful
attempt to overthrow the Trujillo dictatorship, the
family emigrated to New York in 1960.

In New York, Julia faced many of the
same issues other immigrants face
like mispronunciation of
Spanish names.
