Introduction
Animals and Birds
The fauna of the British Isles is similar of Europe. Some of the mammals
such as the bear, the wolf, the wild boar and the reindeer have become
extinct. The Britain known to the Saxons, Vikings and Normans was
very different from the one we know today. Deer, wolves, bears and
eagles were common. The origins of some of the places tell us about
this. Derby means “many deer near one village”. Everton comes from
“eofor”, which meant “wild boar that lived in forests”. Nowadays,
foxes, badgers and otters live on the British Isles. On various parts of
the coast there are seals. Sea-gulls and other sea birds usually nest
near the coast. There are three species of snakes, of which only one is
venomous.
Wild boar – кабан
Reindeer – северный олень
Eagle - орёл
Badger - барсук
Otter - выдра
Seal - тюлень
Sea-gull (mew) - чайка
England
Animals, Snakes, Birds
In England there are about 50 species of land mammals. Several
species such as the bear, the wolf and the beaver were exterminated in
historic times.
There are three kinds of snakes in England – the grass-snake, the
smooth snake and the adder (viper), the latter carrying poison.
The birds are more numerous than the mammals and there is one
bird peculiar to Britain – the red grouse.
Beaver – бобр
Grass-snake – уж обыкновенный
Adder (viper) – гадюка обыкновенная
Red grouse – шотландский тетерев
Wales
Animals, Birds
The polecat is common in central Wales. Grassholm, off
Pembrokeshire, is the home of one of the largest gannet colonies
in Europe.
In Snowdonia there are numerous foxes. Otters are common
in the rivers and badgers can be seen in woodlands.

Gannet - баклан
Scotland
Animals, Fish, Birds
Scotland lost the brown bear in the 9th century, the elk and reindeer
in the 12th century and the beaver in the 16th century. The last wolf of
Scotland was killed in 1743.
The largest wild mammal in Scotland is the Atlantic gray seal. It is a
huge beast. Wild red deer, foxes and badgers are common near the rivers
and on small islands.
The bird life of Scotland is rather rich. Scotland is proud of its gold
eagle.
The rivers provide good salmon and trout fishing. Many lochs (lakes)
hold the chair and there are pikes in many rivers.
Elk - лось
Red deer - марал
Golden eagle - беркут
Salmon - лосось
Trout - форель
Chair - голец
Pike - щука
Northern Ireland
Birds, Fish
The insular position of Ireland explains the absence of
many animals which are common in Britain.
There are no nightingales and there are no snakes. A
legend says that St. Patrick, the priest who lived in the 5th
century, sent the snake away.
Rivers provide good salmon, eel and herring fishing.
Nightingale - соловей
Eel (grig) - угорь
Herring - сельдь

The Channel Islands
The fauna of the Channel Islands
is poor. Of all the mammals the
rabbit is the largest wild animal. The
last fox was killed in Jersey in 1860.
Colonies of gannets, cormorants
and petrels can be seen there. Apart
from sea birds ravens and peregrine
falcons also nest there.
The Isle of Man
There are no toads or snakes on the
Isle of Man. The mountain hares and
hedgehogs are plentiful.
The Isle of Man is known for its cats.
The Manx cat is unique. It is either
without tail or with a very short one. The
Isle of Man is also famous for the Manx
sheep with four horns.
The perch is the only fresh-water fish.
Salmon, trout and eel are numerous.
Magpies and ravens are plentiful.
