SELECTING COLLEGES
VERY IMPORTANT!
The most selective schools can NEVER be considered “target”
colleges
If you student’s college list consists primarily of “reach” schools,
this will be a very stressful process and the outcome could be
disappointing
If the student really looks for schools that fit him/her well
(e.g. individual needs, values, interests), this should not be a proble

FINANCIAL FIT: THE NEW NET PRICE
CALCULATOR
What is a net price calculator (NPC) and how
does it differ from ‘EFC’ calculators?
• NPC estimates out-of-pocket expenses instead of
an Expected Family Contribution
All undergraduate colleges awarding federal aid
must provide NPC via their websites by 10/29/11.
“… to help prospective students, families, and other
consumers estimate the individual net price of an
institution of higher education.”
Legislated definition of net price –
Cost for average first‐year full‐time student less median
amount of all need and merit‐based federal, state,
institutional grant aid awarded to first‐year, full‐time
•NPCs can help students and families make more informed
decisions about where to go and how to prepare academically & financially - for a college that fits their needs.
