In 1959 President Eisenhower asked congress for
$1 billion for the Department of Health Education
& Welfare new American Education Fund for the
promotion and publication of the new science of
Evolution. $10,500,000 was given to the National
Science Foundation (NSF) for the new 9 part theme
curriculum, teaching evolution. The NSF provided
the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BSCS)
with the funds to provide the textbooks to public
schools.
