GLOBAL EXPERIENCE CERTIFICATE BE IN THE GLOBAL GAME !! A recent Calgary survey of employers found that all respondents thought international experience was an asset to a student’s employability. “There is a huge demand now for people who understand other cultures or speak other Languages and know how business operates abroad, “ says Jeff Brownlee, vice president for communications at the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters trade association. “Canadian businesses and industry have to be in the global game. We were spoiled for generations because of our closeness geographically to the States, with basically the same language and culture. Now we need the international perspective, so graduates with that understanding or experience are sought after.” (The Chronicle of Higher Education – September 2010) GEC REQUIREMENTS Undergraduate students who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents must complete 3 components Language/Global Studies Course International experience Cross cultural volunteer experience LANGUAGE/GLOBAL STUDIES COURSES 2 sequential language courses (other then your native language) PLUS 1 Global Studies course INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE OUTSIDE CANADA & US Exchange Co-op work term Study Abroad Volunteer experience (requires ISO approval) All must be minimum 6 weeks duration CROSS CULTURAL VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE volunteer experience on or off campus minimum 20 hour commitment log sheet and one page summary must be submitted at end of term Examples: -SHADOW Program -English Conversation Program MIX IT UP!
