Mission and scope of the IBC

Pennsylvania Governor’s School for
International Studies (PGSIS)
• The Pennsylvania Governor’s School for International
Studies (PGSIS) serves the primary purpose of providing
select academically talented and highly motivated high
school students with a challenging, integrated
introduction to the social sciences and the foreign
language and culture studies important to global studies
education. The 2000 program, June 25 – July 29, will host
100 rising juniors from Pennsylvania (for 5 weeks) and 16
students from Omiya, Japan (for 10 days).

• History and Mission Statement
– Founded in 1926 by Chancellor John G. Bowman and Ruth Crawford
Mitchell.
– The mission was to involve Pittsburgh’s ethnic communities in a
project showcasing their heritages
– From 1938 to 2000, 26 rooms have been dedicated
– Committees and friends fund more than 25 summer study abroad
scholarships annually
– Each year some 30,000 paying guests tour the rooms with Quo Vadis
guides and docents.

– Oversees all program elements. Establishes policy. Coordinates and
heads all Study Abroad/student scholarship selection and faculty
grant panels. Organizes VIP hospitality. Initiates promotion and
publicity efforts.
• Eileen Kiley, Assistant to the Director
– Scholarship administrator, budget/financial/human resources
officer/office manager. Manages 40 endowments, new room funds.
Participates in new room coordination. Prepares semi-annual
departmental newsletter. Supervises Sunday/Monday/Holidays
Information Center Coordinator.

– Principal contact with 36 Nationality Committees and the Nationality
Council. Organizes all special events, manages 40 committee
agency accounts. Prepares the trimester financial reports for
Nationality Council. Supervises departmental secretary and work
study students.
• Kathie Fritz, Quo Vadis Advisor/Tour Coordinator
– Manages year-round tours of Nationality Rooms. Recruits, trains and
advises volunteer student guides, prepares budget, interfaces with
Student Government Board. Supervises Information Center

– Greets all visitors, provides information about CL, dispatches tours,
conducts inspection of nationality rooms, controls keys

History
• Established at the University Center for International
Studies (UCIS) in 1974, PEHSC’s programs promote, at the
K-12 level, a greater awareness of the Commonwealth of
Pennsylvania’s ethnic diversity and of the contributions of
its many ethnic groups.
• Joseph T. Makarewicz
– Director from 1979 to the Fall of 1999. Joe, who made the program
such a success, has retired and was last seen playing in his garden.

• Mission: to promote cultural, educational and commercial
ties among Western Pennsylvanians and other peoples of
the world.
