• It is important for counselors to remain cognizant about
services and individuals that could enhance school
programs.
• Counselors should utilize community and other school
services to supplement their own services.

Parents and Guardians
• Schools, teachers and counselors must have a
collaborative relationship with the parents of their students.
• Through needs assessment counselors should
determine what services they should offer parents.
• Counselors should 1) consult with parents, 2) design
informational programs for parents and 3) invite parents to
volunteer and encourage support of the student..

• are the first line of help to counselors and are often the
referral sources.
• have valuable input regarding counseling programs and
their effectiveness.
• can help counselors identify student needs.

ensure the best possible outcome for students with special
needs.

• Counselors are supervised by principals.
• Principals are generally in charge of the counselors
budget.
• When working with principals, counselors should be
aware that ethical guidelines regarding confidentiality with
students still apply.

Nurses, Psychologists, and Social Workers
• The school counselor coordinates referrals, follows
cases, schedules team meetings, to make sure students
receive appropriate services.
• Team work is the key in providing the best possible
services. All play an important role in the health of
students.
• Collaboration with other professionals both in school and
in the community means students get the best possible
services.

Community Agencies
• Health Departments: Assist with medical check-ups,
offer guidance on the physical growth, sexuality and
healthcare needs of students.
• Mental-Health Centers: Help students remediate social,
emotional and behavioral problems.
• Social Services: Helps families with economic issues
and becomes involved in cases of abuse.
• Family Services: Offer family intervention and mitigates
family stress.
• Private Practitioners: Assist with longer term counseling.
