The Object Management Group™
(OMG™)

OMG is an international, open membership, not-for-profit
computer industry consortium

OMG Task Forces develop enterprise integration standards
for a wide range of technologies, including:

Analysis & Design, Architecture-Driven Modernization and
Middleware

Business Modeling and Integration

Real-time, Embedded and Specialized Systems

C4I, Finance, Government, Healthcare, Legal Compliance, Life
Sciences Research, Manufacturing Technology, Robotics,
Software-Based Communications and Space
2
OMG’s Modeling Standards

Enable powerful visual design, execution and maintenance of
software and other processes, including Systems Modeling and
Business Process Management

MDA® is Model Driven Architecture®, a vendor-neutral approach for
developing platform independent models that document business
functionality and behavior, separate from the technology that
implements it

UML® is the Unified Modeling Language® for modeling application
structure, behavior, and architecture, business process, and data
structure

SysML is the Systems Modeling Language for modeling hardware,
software, data, personnel, procedures, and facilities
3
Systems Engineering Domain
Special Interest Group (SE DSIG)

Jointly chartered by OMG and International
Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) in
2001

Focused on standards for system modeling

UML for SE: SysML adoption beginning in April ‘06

UML Profile for DODAF/MODAF (UPDM)


RFP issued in Sept 05
Model Driven Architecture (MDA) for SE

Just starting
SE DSIG Site at http://syseng.omg.org

UML Profile for DoDAF/MODAF
(UPDM)

UPDM is:

An industry standard UML/SysML specification for the
representation & exchange of DoDAF and MODAF
architecture descriptions

Being standardized by Object Management Group
(OMG)

Available at
http://www.omg.org/cgi-bin/doc?c4i/07-02-01
5
Motivation for UPDM

Significantly enhance the quality, productivity,
and effectiveness associated with architecture
and system of systems modeling

Promote architecture model reuse and
maintainability

Improve tool interoperability and communications
between stakeholders

Reduce training impacts due to different tool
implementations and semantics
Develop UML Profile for DoDAF/MODAF that provides
industry standard UML/SysML representation &
exchange of DoDAF/MODAF architecture descriptions
