Chapter 7 Bellwork SPI 0807.T/E.3 to 4 Sep 13, 2012 Unintend. Consq. & Bioengineering 1) Copy and fill in the concept map below (see p520) Intended & Unintended Consequences Cars Intended? Unintended? Intended? Unintended? 1 Chapter Plan 7 Sep 13, 2012 SPI 0807.T/E.3 to 4 Unintend. Consq. & Bioengineering 1) 1st Per Only: Discuss Door Contest 2) Bellwork and Birthdays 3) Describe objective 4) Go get your clickers 5) Pass back prog report and diagram: grade them both 6) Notes and discussion 7) COPY THIS INTO YOUR AGENDA Homework: Make a double-door foldable about today’s notes Silly Thought: I spilled spot remover on my dog… …now he’s gone Chapter RSM 7 0807.T/E.3 Unintended Consqs. 807.T/E.4 Bioengineering Unintended Consequences(p27) • Unintended consequences: are uses or results that engineers do not purposely include when designing some product or process Example: Cell phones-One unintended consequence is wrecking you car while talking when driving. Other Example(s): Cell phone towers (see p27) NOTE: Unintended consequences are not always bad. Sometimes they are good! Example: In WWII, engineers invented sonar to allow submarines to navigate underwater. One unintended consequence is sonagrams for babies. 2 Chapter RSM 7 0807.T/E.3 Unintended Consqs. 807.T/E.4 Bioengineering Bioengineering (p28) Bio=life Engineering=process to make technology Bioengineering=making technology to improve the life of living things Two Types: Assistive: helps you but does not change your body Examples: eyeglasses, external hearing aids, crutches Other examples?______________________________ Adaptive: helps you and you body is changed Examples: artificial heart, Cochlear ear implant (see p28), etc Other examples? _____________________________ 3 Chapter RSM 7 SPI 0807.T/E.3 to 4 Unintend. Consq. & Bioengineering Bellwork: Unintended Consequences & Bioengineering (Foldable) 1) Turn to page 515 in your science textbook. 2) Follow the instructions at the bottom about how to make a double-door foldable. 3) Label the two outside flaps as follows: top flap: Unintended Consequences (p27) bottom flap: Bioengineering (p28) 4) Write on the inside of these two flaps as follows: inside of top flap: 3 facts about unintended consequences inside of bottom flap: Describe two types of bioengineering 5) On the inside-middle of the paper describe one type of technology and include one unintended consequences of this technology. 4
