One of their research tools is the National Radio Astronomy Observatory's Robert C. Byrd Telescope, located in Green Bank, WV. West Virginia University Faculty • • • • • • • Tenure-track and Tenured faculty Research Faculty HSC Faculty (SM, SD, SN) Clinical Faculty (Extension) Teaching Faculty Librarians Faculty Equivalent Academic Professionals Tenure • Tenure is essential for competitive recruiting • Tenure is associated with freedom of academic opinion • Annual/Performance review is not precluded • Usual routes to tenure – Associated with promotion from a tenure-track position – Granted upon recruitment for some senior scholars or academic leaders “…..annual evaluations establish a continuous written record of expectations and performance that will encourage professional growth and provide support for retention, promotion, tenure and other recognition.” Typical Achievements for Tenure (Assistant Professor – Five Year Record) • Outstanding Annual Evaluations • Substantial Contributions in Research – Broad interpretation – scholarly activity – Peer-reviewed Journal Publications, Books, Notable Performances or Exhibitions – Seeking and acquiring external funding • Substantial Contributions in Teaching – Outstanding classroom evaluations – Guidance of Graduate Students – Development of Curriculum • Reasonable Contributions in Service – To profession, institution and State • Supportive External Evaluations First Example: Creative Arts 2 years as visiting assistant professor (one-year contracts) 4 years as assistant professor Double Bass, Music Theory, and Music in World Cultures • Taught a total of 53 courses (18 course topics) with a total enrollment of 1052, and individual enrollments as high as 193 • Student Evaluations from 4.3/5 to 5/5. • Served on the committees of 10 Master’s and research advisor for 4 Doctoral students (completed) • 21 performances as soloist (recitals and concerti) or chamber musician • Orchestral musician in 44 productions • Composed 8 pieces of concert music and 6 pieces of www.musicwithease.com liturgical music • Read 2 papers at conferences and published 7 articles (3 peer-reviewed) and a book chapter • Served on 8 committees & performed 4 reviews • Praised by external evaluators Second Example: Engineering (CEMR) Five Year Tenure Track Period as Assistant Professor Researcher in Energy, Fuels and Emissions Photograph: Clark • Taught 15 courses with average student evaluation of 4.09/5 • Mentored 14 MS students and one Ph.D. student to graduation • Eight reviewed journal papers, 29 conference papers, 5 oral presentations and a patent (with 5 prior patents to his name) • Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-PI on 214 proposals for $41,642,478 total, 171 awards for $27,993,778 total • Responsible for $4,981,383 in externally funded research expenditures • Society of Automotive Engineers Member; Member of two technical committees; World Congress Session Organizer & Chair, Paper Reviewer • Department Curriculum Committee Chair • Fundamentals of Engineering Thermodynamics Review Presenter on 11 occasions Demands on the Faculty • Capacity for Research and Scholarly Activity is dictated by teaching and service loads: Student/Faculty ratio is an important factor • In science and engineering disciplines, faculty are pressured to find external funding for graduate students and for research continuity • Research fosters informed teaching and high quality ratings, but proposal writing is time-consuming and distracting • Compliance and accountability requirements are growing • Use of technology is both a time-saver and a time-sink • Lack of efficiency in processes detracts from the mission QUESTIONS AND DISCUSSION
