POWER SUMMIT OBJECTIVES
• Concerted effort of all stakeholders in power sector to develop projects
sustainably by using water resources of Nepal
• An effort to bring the developers – investors, financiers, insurers,
government and the state utility to a common platform
• Focus towards jump-starting private sector initiatives
• Provide valuable information on projects ready for development
• Cover issues in project financing and likely models
• Provide information on perception of risks and project risks
• Information on securitization of risks through market mechanism
and;
• Educating power developers on multidimensional aspects of hydropower
project : technical aspects, power transmission and trading, project
financing, project risk, project insurance etc.

Power Summit 2006 was held during 7-8 September 2006 with a tagline
"Powering Opportunities"
The organizer, IPPAN and PTC India felt the tagline as very pertinent
Participation of PTC India Limited as a strong co-organizer
Government of Nepal, Government of India and various public and private
sector institutions had joined Summit 06.
Almost 45 institutional participants from Nepal and 35 from India
Able to highlight Nepal’s hydropower potential, challenges and
opportunities.
Technical sessions: Multi disciplinary covering such issue as the
– projects available for development, development issues, market and
regulatory environment, financing and risk in hydro power projects
development etc.

Power Summit 2007 held on 17-18 Sept. and followed the same tagline
IPPAN, Nepal Banker’s Association (NBA) and PTC India as the
organizers
The active and enthusiastic role of NBA in Power Summit 2008 was
encouraging to all power developers –especially to technocrats
Government of Nepal, Ministry of Water Resources, Department of
Electricity Development, Nepal Electricity Authority and the private
sector responded enthusiastically.
Government of India, various public and private sector institutions of
India also joined the Summit.
Developers from India, China, Norway, Australia, Korea etc. showed
great interest in the presentations made and the projects hilighted
More than 70 institutional participants from Nepal and 50 from India –
significant increase from the Summit 06.
Technical Sessions were very focused:
– Mechanisms for setting up real-time power trade were presented
by organizations such as PTC India, IL&FS etc.
– Policy & Regulatory Environment for Nepal India Hydropower
Cooperation discussed in detail.
– Hydropower Policy & Regulatory Framework in Nepal
– Issues in Hydropower Development; Construction & Financing
– Transmission, Interconnection & Power Trade Issues
• Transmission planning: anomalies and shortcomings
• Role of PTC in cross border Power Trade & Development
– Financiers' Perspective
– Project Risk & Insurance Perspective
POWER SUMMIT OBJECTIVES: how did we fare?
• Private sector sponsors, banks, financial institutions, insurance companies have
joined the debate and are participating in the hydropower development process.
• Cross-border transmission lines through the NEA- IL&FS initiative are in the
process of development.
