College Admission and the
The Millennial Generation
Presented by
Eric Gutierrez
Based on Seven Steps To Becoming A Competitive
Student and Compelling College Candidate
Who Are They &
What’s The Big Deal?
Mindset of Millennials
 Email is just too slow, and they seldom use snail
mail (traditional mail).
 Czechoslovakia has never existed.
 “Go West, young grad” has always implied
“and don’t stop until you get to Asia…and learn
Chinese along the way”
 They never twisted the coiled handset cord
aimlessly around their wrists while chatting on
the telephone.
 “Caramel macchiato” and “Venti half-caf vanilla
latte” have always been street corner lingo.
 DNA fingerprinting and maps of the human
genome have always existed.
 Russians and Americans have always been
living together in space.
 Having hundreds of cable channels but nothing
to watch has always been routine
 Few in the class know how to write in cursive
 Fergi is a pop singer, not a princess
 Colorful lapel ribbons and bracelets have
always been worn to indicate support for a
cause.
 Second-hand smoke has always been an official
carcinogen.
 Korean cars have always been a staple on
American highways.
 Band-Aids have always been available in
varying skin tones.
Parenting
• Buy Smart Phones for children
• Constantly Connected (Digital Natives)
• Customization/Personalization is important
 (phones, clothes, shoes, etc.)
• Post 9/11 environment - Safety of Major Concern
 Helmets – bikes, skateboards, scooters, etc.
 Car Seats
 Organic Foods
 Padded playgrounds
• Scheduling of Extra Curricular Activities
Scheduling Overload
Perception of “risk-taking and success”
The “ME” Generation!
How to engage millenials?
My Perception of Millenials

Entitled
Full of hope
They ask WHAT
Driven
Arrogance
Individual Accountability
Searching for purpose
Lack basic ‘soft skills’
Not WHY
Don’t fully understand competition

Describe the world you come from.- -For
example, your family, community or school
and tell us how your world has shaped your
dreams and aspirations. (UC Applications)
Tell us about an idea or an experience you
have had that you find intellectually engaging.
(Stanford)
What are your three most substantial
accomplishments and why do you view
them as such? (Harvard)
Thomas Edison failed many times before successfully inventing the modern electric light
bulb. He said, "If I find 10,000 ways something won't work, I haven't failed. I am not
discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is another step forward." Reflect
on an accomplishment you achieved in an unlikely way. (USC)
If you could change one thing you’ve done in your life, what would it be, and how
would you do it differently? (NYU)
Developing Self Efficacy
Self-efficacy is the belief in one’s
capabilities, or the degree of
confidence that people have in
their ability to succeed at a task
that matters to them.

Finding Meaningful Extra Curriculars
“We retain 10% of what we read. We retain 20% of what we hear. We retain 30% of
what we see. We retain 50% of what we hear and see. We retain 70% of what we
say. We retain 90% of what we do.

Education and Academic Entrepreneurism
 Increased efforts to recruit international students.
• International applicants to graduate school outnumbered U.S.
Applicants. (Princeton Alumni Weekly, 2011)
• International Students increased by 5 percent to over 720,000
during the 2010/11 academic year.
 International students contribute $21 billion to U.S.
economy through expenditures on tuition and living
expenses (U.S. Dept. of Commerce).
Globalism
Impact on Primary,
Secondary, and Higher
Level Education Systems
Tomorrow's leaders pride themselves in their ability to problem-solve
though diligent planning, engage in effective communication techniques,
collaborate, and apply team building skills.
They are strongly independent and have the skills
to think and act interdependently.
The Myth of a
Well-Rounded
Student
Colleges want a well-rounded class,
not a well-rounded student.
*Holistic Admissions Model
The College Game Begins in 8th Grade
Middle School schedule allows for
exploration, establish a vision, or develop
a dream
Create a 4-year academic plan
Develop shorter range goals
Create a 4-year summer plan that directly
speaks to vision, dream, at very least
establish a skeleton.
Breadth Vs. Depth
Interests in playing an instrument: Band, first chair, regional youth symphony,
engage in a larger meaningful project where you apply your affinity to music
with larger community, etc.
Art: Art Classes, Community College Art, Community Projects involving art,
start to develop a portfolio (online), Showcase Art in an exhibit or create
your own exhibit with your personal work and others, intern/work at
graphic design company.
English/Humanities: write for school newspaper/broadcast, local newspaper,
L.A. Youth, identify a paper internationally and write for their paper or blog
(international correspondent).
Obviously, this is not something you start your senior or junior year of H.S.
HOW TO DISCOVER YOUR PASSION?
This is something like dating vs. engagement/marriage
You must have a “courting” period
