ESEA PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT REQUIREMENTS

Overview of the the legal requirements
 Elementary
and Secondary Education Act (ESEA)
formerly known as No Child Left Behind (NCLB)
 And soon to be known as College-and-Career Ready
Students

CESA 10 will be monitored next year for ESEA
compliance.
PARENT INVOLVEMENT

Parent involvement means “the participation of
parents in regular, two-way, meaningful
communication involving student academic
learning and other school activities ensuring –
That parents play an integral role in assisting their
child’s learning
 That parents are encouraged to be actively involved in
their child’s education at school
 That parents are full-partners in their child’s education
and are included, as appropriate, in decision-making
and on advisory committees to assist in the education
of their child.”

WHY IS PARENT INVOLVEMENT REQUIRED?
The evidence is consistent, positive, and
convincing: families have a major influence on
their children’s achievement in school and
through life. When schools, families, and
community groups work together to support
learning, children tend
to do better in school,
stay in school longer,
and like school.
(Henderson, & Mapp, 2002)

WHY IS PARENT INVOLVEMENT REQUIRED?

Students with involved parents, no matter what
their income or background, are more likely to:
 Earn
high grades and test scores, and enroll in
higher-level programs
 Pass their classes, earn credits, and be promoted
 Attend school regularly
 Graduate and go on to post-secondary education
