Organizing Life’s Diversity
Organizing Life’s Diversity
About 1.8 million species of organisms
have been named and described.
 Biologists have created a system for
categorizing organisms, separating them
into groups according to their similarities.

Levels of Classification
Species: a group of organisms whose
members have the same structural traits and
who can interbreed with each other.
 Genus (plural genera): a group of related
species.
 Family: a taxonomic group comprised of
members of similar genera.
 Order: a group of similar families.

Class: a taxonomic group comprised of
members of similar orders.
 Phylum (plural phyla): a major taxonomic
group, lower than the kingdom, comprising
members of similar classes.
 Kingdom: a taxonomic group comprised of
members of similar phyla.
