1. Quietly begin reading pages 55-56 in Gateways to
Science Grade 6.
2. On the next open page of your composition book
list 1 thing you learned about each of the following
energy forms.
1. Mechanical energy
2. Radiant energy
3. Chemical energy
4. Electrical energy
5. Thermal energy

1. Fold the foldable hot-dog style
2. Only glue down the gray shaded column onto the next
open page of your composition book.
3. Add the foldable to your table of contents.
4. Use the chart from today’s reading, week 11

COMPLETE THE FOLDABLE USING THE INFORMATION BELOW:
- energy generated through movement
(light or solar)- the energy of electromagnetic
waves.
-vibration that moves through a solid, liquid, or
gas to our ears
- energy released from chemical reactions
- energy generated through electricity
- energy released during a nuclear reaction,
generally fusion or fission
(heat)- energy that changes the temperature
of an object.

Look at the example below, tracing back a car’s energy:
The car’s
moving energy
comes from
burning fuel.
Fuel’s chemical

The tiny animals get
from the atoms inside it.

Make your own diagram tracing back the energy in a toaster as
far as you can go.

DO NOW
Identify which form of energy most likely caused the changes described
below. You may use each energy from your chart one time only.
1. A bar of chocolate left in the car melted.__________________
2. A glass broke when the girl screamed really loud and
high.__________________________
3. The color of a sheet of blue construction paper taped to a window
faded over time.______________________________
4. The handlebars of a bicycle rusted.______________________
5. After walking across the carpet, a student feels a tingly shock when
touching a metal doorknob._______________________
6. A frog uses powerful hind limbs to jump across the
grass.__________________________

Helium changes into two hydrogen atoms after
being bombarded with

Penny on a Bottle
Follow these directions with your partner:
1. Hold the neck of the bottle in the ice water for a
few seconds.
2. Place the penny over the mouth of the jar.
3. Place some oil around the bottles opening or on
the penny in order to provide a completely air
tight seal.
4. Now hold bottle in your hands and carefully
observe the penny
Penny on a Bottle
At first the air inside
the bottle is cold, so
the air molecules
are closer together
When you hold the
bottle, heat energy from
your hands warms the air
in the bottle
The air then moves more,
pushing against the bottle,
including the penny at the top,
causing it to move.

Why did the penny jump?

STATION 1
-The ball is less dense than the water,
so the water pushes the ball back to
the surface.
STATION 3
- Striking the tuning fork causes air
molecules to bounce between the two
forks. This creates sound and moves the
ping pong ball.
STATION 2
-The electrons in the magnet are
attracted to the iron in the paperclip.
-This attractions pulls the paperclip to the
magnet.
STATION 4
-The dish soap causes the fat in the milk to
break down and move away from the
other fat particles.
-The food coloring lets us see the
movement caused by the reaction
between the soap and the fat.

Your hand transferred moving or
mechanical energy to the ping pong

STATION 3
-Sound is a form of mechanical energy
because it is produced by moving air
particles.

STATION 2
-The magnet pulls the paperclip towards
it, using electromagnetic energy to move
the paperclip (which becomes mechanical
energy) .
Electromagnet to Mechanical
STATION 5
-The dish soap broke down the bonds in
the milk, causing it to move.

Answer the following prompt in
the space provided.
A farmer plans a field of corn.
How many energy
transformations can you come up
with for this scenario? Draw
pictures with arrow to show how
energy transforms from one form
to another. You can include
energy transformations in the
corn field and after the corn is
harvested.

Answer the following prompt on the
next open page of your composition
book.
A farmer plans corn in a field and it
grows outside for several months.
After the corn has grown to full size,
the farmer harvests the corn and takes
it to a farmer’s market. Customers at
the farmer’s market buy the corn and
take it home to cook for dinner. How

DO NOW:
There is a very important law in science that states that energy
cannot be created or destroyed. However, energy can be made
more useful by changing it from one form to another.
Record at least three examples of how energy is changed from
one form to another to make it more useful in your own life. You
may use page 58 of Gateways to Science Grade 6 as a reference.
