ESTSS and its structure
Trauma does not stop at local borders.
European countries share similar histories and experiences in
facing traumatic events.
Yet also locally unique ways in dealing and coping with
trauma
Gathering together these European similarities and diversities
strengthen and enrich our work on the trauma field

1988: First European Conference on Traumatic Stress, Lincoln
1992: STSS  ISTSS + 1st World Conference on Traumatic
Stress in Amsterdam
1993: ESTSS formally launched
Wolter de Loos
Now 23 yrs later: much more on the way to truely
multicultural cross-European organisation
Reaching out to South-Eastern
parts of Europe
ESTSS objectives
- increase & disseminate knowledge of traumatic stress
- stimulate cross European training for certification.
- stimulate and help to set up local societies
- establish European wide research on traumatic stress
- focus on European issues relating to traumatic stress
- liaise with international organisations/bodies.

2007: EU funded project to support ESTSS mission: aiming
to increase evidence based care for trauma victims
throughout Europe:

Towards an
umbrella structure
Since 2009:
umbrella structure
ESTSS membership consists of:
• all members from member societies (local STSSs)
• individual members from affiliated societies
• regular individual members
Member societies are local, regional or language based traumatic stress societies
who share the aims of the ESTSS .
Formal agreement that the entire membership of the Member society will become
members of ESTSS
