Our School • Safe and nurturing environment • Central location in the county • Relaxed yet focused environment where students can learn without distraction AMHS Contract • Each student signs a contract with his/her parents, faculty and administration committing to: – Complete a challenging curriculum of Honor-level courses with a minimum of four Advanced Placements courses; – Complete a summer reading list AMHS Contract • Demonstrate advanced levels of computer literacy and applications; • Demonstrate advanced levels of proficiency in a foreign language; • Complete a senior thesis that requires original research, collaborative study/research with a professional mentor, and the oral defense of the thesis; and • Complete a 90-hour community service requirement. Senior Thesis • A year-long research project with the guidance and direction of our faculty and a mentor (a professional in that field). • Unique opportunity for guided but independent research in the field of student’s choice. • Opportunity for publication in academic or professional journals. AP studies begin in 10th grade; seniors often take as many as 5 AP courses. The application includes teacher recommendations and grades; minimum overall B average. Students must have a minimum national percentile rank of 85 on recent norm-referenced achievement tests OR comparable scores on PACT spring testing. Students must demonstrate proficiency in composition and grammar by successfully completing a writing sample. Call the school for appointments at AMHS. Writing sample sessions will be offered at public middle schools. Completion of Algebra I and Spanish I or French I in grade eight is recommended. Applications are due in November each year and are available at your middle schools and at the Magnet (746-1300).
