THE THREE PERSUASIVE APPEALS
Ethos
• Talks to conscience: right vs. wrong
• Credibility and reputation
• Example: Ari wants pizza
• Mom, you’re tired (it’s easy!)
• It will be easier to do homework
Logos
• Talks to brain: uses thinking and logic
• Shows the good reasons that you think the way
you do
• Example: Ari wants mom to buy pizza
• Mom, it has healthy stuff
• Did research (appeal to authority); it’s on the
food pyramid
Pathos
• Talks to heart: uses emotions and feelings
• Make sure the audience feels the way you do
• Example: Ari wants Pizza
• Mom, I LOVE pizza! It makes me happy!
