AAPG Energy Minerals Division (EMD) Serving the Greater AAPG Membership by Increasing: Member Benefits, Communications with AAPG Leadership and Technical Standing Committees, and Cooperation with the DEG and DPA. 2010 Version 2.0 How Does the EMD Serve Today? As a Supporting Technical Wing of the AAPG that : 1. Serves as an integral part of a global professional community for geoscientists in developing so-called unconventional and alternative energy resources, whether they are hydrocarbonbased, carbon-based, nuclear-based, or geothermal-based, 2. Serves as a recognized center of information for unconventional and alternative energy-related geoscience and technology within the AAPG, 3. Serves as part of a global organization that effectively promotes the exchange of unconventional and alternative energyrelated geoscientific information and the dissemination of associated research (from Government, University, and Industry Sources), and 4. Serves as a center of respected professionals who encourage the appropriate standards for ethical and environmental practice in unconventional and alternative energy development in cooperation with AAPG’s DPA and DEG. Enhance the technical committee structure and committee membership. Action: Provide assistance to committee chairs with addition of Technical Vice Chairs including: a) Industry, b) Government, c) University, d) DEG Representative, and e) DPA Representative. 2. Provide member benefits and services on unconventional and alternative energy resources that create value within the global geoscientific community. By Opening Membership to AAPG Community 2010 / 2011 Initiatives 3. Invite AAPG membership to participate in EMD commodity activities. Action: Deliver additional benefits and services through: a) EMD and AAPG websites (offering Commodity–Specific Technical Information, Web Portal, Search & Discovery), b) Blast E-mails to AAPG members to advise on regional and national, and international meetings, and brochure mailings. 4. Strengthen and streamline the communications between the AAPG Standing Committees and EMD. Action: Promote geoscientific research & applied technology through: a) An organizational structure that facilitates two-way communications between AAPG and EMD, i.e., AAPG President-Elect with EMD President and EMD President-Elect with AAPG Technical Standing Committees, and EMD VP w/ AAPG Education & Publications. b) Eliminating EMD’s GIS, Education, & Outreach Committees and by creating the EMD Unconventional Resources Committee to consolidate communications with AAPG Technical Standing Committees through one EMD Officer, and c) Design communications pathways between AAPG & EMD to maintain communications and to provide support for EMD activities. Assist AAPG to be financially strong. Action: Provide income opportunities where EMD helps to: a) b) c) d) Organize content and presenters for meetings, Prepare AAPG-EMD publications, Generate exposure for AAPG functions by display ads on EMD Website, and Recruit new members. 6. Build relationships with affiliated societies, sister societies, and other recognized organizations, such as: AIPG, NGWA, etc. Action: These relationships will be delivered as follows: a) b) c) d) Hold preliminary discussions with officers of other organizations to establish mutual relationships, Attend meetings of other organizations to evaluate culture, size, financial conditions, Create proposals for AAPG Executive Director to pursue concepts of mutual cooperation with AAPG, and to evaluate feasibility of joint meetings, and Maintain professional relationships with others in outside organizations to recruit members for AAPG-EMD, and also for DEG and DPA.
