History of
development
1995-1997
piaf started as a research project
Involved parties:
German Federal Office of Plant Varieties (BSA) ,
Advisory services of the Federal States of Germany,
Plant breeders and
the University of Münster
The aim of the project was the development of an
evaluation system based on SAS and a relational
database
Since 1998
In cooperation with the advisory services and the
chemical industry in Germany a complete planning-,
information and evaluation system has been
developed based on the results of the research
project
Today, piaf supports the whole workflow beginning
with the planning phase up to the evaluation of
single trial and trial series

The query module is the basis for further
functions like reporting, summaries, data
exchange and PIAFStat
Query conditions can be defined for every item of
a trial; for instance searching active ingredients
or plant protection products combined with
targets and crops or assessment values is possible.

Reporting
piaf contains a reporting tool which allows
advanced users to create new or adapted versions
of existing reports, which can be included as
menu items for other users
All reports and summaries are based on Excel, this
gives a user the possibility to use the output for
further work
Nevertheless, the piaf reporting tool allows the
definition of printable Excel–files, which contain
format specifications like fonts, colours, frames,
page breaks, repeated header et al.

Summaries
Summaries in piaf are not restricted to treatment
mean values, an overview about the conducted
trials belonging to several crops, targets and years
is possible as well as an overview about the
conducted assessments of a number of trials
which can be used as check function
Similar to the reporting tool advanced users can
define their own summaries, which can be
included as menu items for other users
A second summary tool is used more in the
context of variety trials and gives a number of
additional features like the calculation of relative
values
