What is Applied Linguistics?
“Applied Linguistics is:
1) an approach to understanding language issues in
the real world, drawing on theory and empirical
analysis, and
2) an interdisciplinary area of study, in which
linguistics is combined with issues and perspectives
drawn from other disciplines.”

Programme Objectives
The MA Programme in AEL enables students to :
enhance the knowledge of linguistics as a scientific, systematic
study of language;
understand applied linguistics as an interdisciplinary study
drawing on other fields such as psychology and sociology;
critically evaluate the claims made in applied linguistics and apply
theory to practical issues involving language in use; and
equip themselves with the applied-linguistic theories and skills
necessary for the teaching and learning of English as a second
language within the context of Hong Kong.
