Biogas from Organic Waste – Linköping, Sweden
• 100 city buses in the city of Linköping are
driven by biogas.
• 4 filling stations for public use are available in
Linköping.
• More than 1000 cars are fuelled by biogas
beside the city buses. The number is
continuously increasing.

Biogas upgrading
• Biogas from digesters or landfills is a
sustainable and valuable energy source, that
makes a clear contribution to the reduction of
greenhouse gases.
• Although the majority of biogas is still used to
produce electricity, it is becoming apparent
that upgrading biogas to natural gas or fuel
leads to a much higher overall efficiency.
Advanced technology for upgrading biogas
in Göteborg
Low Pressure CO2
Absorbtion Technology
(LP COOAB)
Benefits with COOAB-technology
• No methane loss to atmosphere
• Upgrading at low pressure
• Less need for electrical power
• Excess heat can be used for heating of
digester or houses
• Proven technology in the field of natural gas
Keys to a successful Biogas Plant
• Select robust mechanical equipment such as
receiving unit, conveyors and heat exchangers
• Ensure reliable separation and discharge of
unwanted material
• Design plant for reliable internal substrate transport
• Use only equipment proven for this type of
application

Main issues before investment in
biogas plant
• Secured volume of mixed substrates from industries and/or from
household in amount of minimum 50.000 Ton per year
• Access to more than 80% of substrates in form of organic waste
from industries to non purchase value, less than 20% of
substrates as a purchased crops from farmers
• Biogas plant for bigger area / regional system
• Secured byuer of heat
• Close to natural gas pipe system
• Insured connection to electrical distribution net for produced
electricity from biogas

Design basis:
• BOD = 5 000 kg/d
• COD = 8 000 kg/d
• COD-Reduction = 80 %
• Methane production 0.35 Nm3 CH4 / kg COD-red
• 8 000 kg x 0.8 x 0.35 = 2 240 m3 CH4/d
• 1 m3 CH4 contains = 9.8 kWh
• 2 240 m3 CH4 x 9.8 kWh = 21 952 kWh/d
