Reactions – Section 3
Predicting Products
• The steps for predicting products:
1. Identify the type of reaction
2. Predict the product(s) using the type of reaction
as a model
3. Balance it
Don’t forget about the diatomic elements!
For example, Oxygen is O2 as an element.
Synthesis Reactions
• Synthesis reactions occur when two
substances (generally elements) combine and
form a compound.
reactant + reactant  1 product
• A + B  AB
Example
• Predict the products. Write and balance the
following synthesis reaction equations.
• Sodium metal reacts with chlorine gas
• Na + Cl2 
• Na + Cl2  NaCl
• 2Na + Cl2  2NaCl
• Solid Magnesium reacts with fluorine gas
• Mg + F2 
• Mg + F2  MgF2
• Mg + F2  MgF2
Decomposition
• Decomposition reactions occur when a
compound breaks up into the elements or into
simpler compounds
• 1 Reactant  Product + Product
• AB  A + B
Example
• Predict the products. Then, write and balance
the following decomposition reaction
equations:
• Solid Lead (IV) oxide decomposes
• PbO2 
• PbO2  Pb + O2
• PbO2  Pb + O2
Single Displacement
• Single Displacement Reactions occur when a
metal replaces a metal in a compound OR a
nonmetal replaces a nonmetal in a compound
• Compound + element  product + product
Example
• Predict the products and balance the single
displacement reaction.
• Sodium chloride solid reacts with fluorine gas
• NaCl + F2
• NaCl + F2 NaF + Cl2
• 2NaCl + F2 2NaF + Cl2
Double Displacement
• Double Displacement Reactions occur when a
metal replaces a metal in a compound and a
nonmetal replaces a nonmetal in a compound
• Compound + compound  product + product
• AB + CD  AD + CB
Example
• Predict the products and balance the double
displacement reaction:
• CaCl2 + Na3PO4 
• CaCl2 + Na3PO4  Ca3(PO4)2 + NaCl
• 3CaCl2 + 2Na3PO4  Ca3(PO4)2 + 6NaCl
Practice
• Predict the products and balance the
following reactions:
• Synthesis, Al + F2 
• Decomposition, AlN 
• Single Displacement, Al + Mg(NO3)2
• Double Displacement, AlCl3 + Na3PO4
