Many people look up to people like Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft, or Dave
Thomas, the founder of Wendy’s and hope they can open a successful business in
the future. There is more to being an entrepreneur than just having a good idea,
though. Dave Thomas spent many years working in restaurants, and had a great
career with Kentucky Fried Chicken, when he decided to leave his safe job to try
and start his own restaurant. After Bill Gates received an almost perfect score on
the SAT, he went on to study at Harvard, but instead of choosing to take a

day, it took him twenty minutes to do the homework he had forgotten the night
before. His mother was getting tired of having to wake him up when he forgot to
set his alarm clock.
Andy decided to turn over a new leaf. Every night before he went to bed, he
spent five minutes laying out his clothes, packing up his backpack, and setting his

beach for summer vacation that year. Missing the beach trip for the family
reunion in an opportunity cost. There are many times during history that people
have had to make decisions. When goods were rationed during World War II,
Mom might have to give up iced tea for the month in order to have enough of the

asked why she didn’t get any, and her mom told her, “Oh, I’m sure you won’t like

When the Civil War ended, former slaves were finally free. In many parts of the
country, particularly the South, former slaves were often discriminated against and
denied their rights. Even though the 15th amendment gave all men the right to vote,
and, some years later, the 19th amendment gave women the right to vote, many
African-Americans were still kept from voting. One way some African-Americans were
prevented from voting was by poll taxes, a fee that was charged in order to vote. Many
African-Americans who were poor could not afford to vote.
This unfair treatment led Congress and the Senate to propose and pass the 24th
amendment, which would make it illegal to charge a poll tax to vote. Soon after, threefourths of the states ratified the amendment, and the result is that no one has to pay
in order to vote.

The Soviet Union was made up of Russia and a number of other communist states.
During the 1970’s and 1980’s, the Soviet Union spent a large amount of money in an
arms race with the United States. This made the shortage of goods in the Soviet Union
more of a problem than it already was. When Mikhail Gorbachev took power in 1985,
he tried to make changes to make life in the Soviet Union better, such as giving Soviet
citizens freedom of speech. Soon after, many of the Soviet states that were different
ethnic groups began to fight for their independence. By 1991, the Soviet Union was
beginning to collapse, and it 1992 it became a commonwealth of independent
republics. The Cold War was over, and the Soviet Union was no longer a communist

What makes you who you are? Many of our characteristics are learned behaviors,
but genes control many of our traits, especially our physical appearance. Whether you
will be short, average height, or tall depends on the genetic code passed on to you
through both of your parents. Likewise, the color of your eyes, skin, and hair are
genetic traits that come from your ancestors. Anyone who has commented that you
have your father’s nose or your grandmother’s curly hair is noticing this genetic link.
Even minor traits, like the length of your eyelashes, or whether or not you can curl
your tongue are all determined by the genes passed on to you through your mother
and father.

The animal kingdom is made up of many-celled creatures that feed on living or

groups, or phylum, vertebrates and invertebrates.
Most animals, 97%, are invertebrates. Invertebrates are animals without a
backbone. The largest class of invertebrates is insects, but there are other classes of
invertebrates, such as arachnids, crustaceans, and mollusks.
