• Saint David, the patron
saint of Wales, started a
number of monasteries in
the country. Paintings of
Saint David normally show
him with a dove on his
shoulder. His relics are
now in Saint David’ s
Cathedral in Wales. Saint
David ’s Day is celebrated
on 1 March.

spoke Welsh. My
father and his
brothers could
speak both Welsh
and English, my
generation speaks
no Welsh. I am

Wales is a land of
green fields,
forests and
farms. But it is
also a land of
mountains and
valleys, streams
and waterfalls
Wales is a
country
with its
own
culture
and
history
The capital of Wales is
Cardiff. Cardiff is
Europe's youngest
Capital City,
achieving its status
in 1955, and
although it has
grown into one of the
most vibrant cities. It
has not lost its small
town quality
The name Cardiff is
an Anglicisation of

means "fort" or
"castle." "Dydd" or
"Diff" was a
corruption of "

which Cardiff
castle stands, in
which case
"Cardiff" would

Cardiff is an
industrial city, a
big port, which
also has a lot
of historical
buildings.
The centre of Cardiff is
surprisingly compact
and most of its sights
and attractions are
only a short walk
from one another.
The Museum, Civic
Buildings and Castle
can all be seen from
the main shopping
areas which have
modern shopping
centres together with
beautiful Victorian
Arcades.

Cardiff is a great place to
be a student. Besides
our own college, a
Further Education
College, there are two
large universities and
the Welsh College of
Music and Drama.
Although Cardiff is a
very cosmopolitan city,
it does not have an
over-concentration of
foreign students and
you will find it easy to
practice the language
here.On this picture you
can see the University
of Cardiff.
