Dream Deferred
Langston Hughes
What happens to a dream
deferred?
Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore-And then run?
Does it stink like rotten
meat?
Or crust and sugar over-like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.
Or does it explode?
QW #2 Help
·Have you ever had
to give up or
postpone a dream?
·How does this poem
relate to Marian
Anderson's life?
·Use imagery or
similes/metaphors to
describe what
happens to an
unfullfilled dream.
Reviewing "Marian Anderson"
1. In this biography, the narrator describes the reality of racial segregation
practices during the 1930's & 1940's. How did Marian Anderson's career
help expose the truth about racism during this time? Use at least 2 details
from the text to support your answer.
Marian Anderson's career exposed the truth that people could exist together, regardless of
color. For example, in 1939 the Daughters of the American Revolution refused to let her
sing. Many people of all colors protested and she got to sing at the Lincoln Memorial
instead. One of the largest crowds in history came to hear her & included all races.
Secondly, even though she was denied accommodations at many hotels because of
segregation, she was popular enough to sing over 100 concerts a year all over the world.
This shows that people didn't care what color she was, they just wanted to hear her sing.
2. Describe two ways Hughes' biography of Marian Anderson differs from
Maya Angelou's autobiography regarding their WRITING STYLE.
First, Hughes's biography of Marian Anderson uses historical events while Angelou's is
full of descriptive personal memories. Another difference is that Angelou's using a lot of
figurative language & Hughes's is very factual and direct.
3. What organizational structure does Hughes' use?
