Introductions
• Welcome grade 5 French Immersion students and their families from
Springfield Heights and Sun Valley Elementary Schools
• Represents our first opportunity for school information sharing. This is
to be followed up with our open house, registration packages, school
visits, letters and website information
• Division Plan has been on the drawing board since 2001 to make all
schools across the division into early, middle and senior years
• River East Collegiate (REC) catchment reconfiguration plan moves
Grade 6 students into middle years setting and Grade 9 students into
REC
• The plan is going to free up space in early years schools so the division
can comply with 20K3 (no more than 20 kids in k-grade3 classrooms)

• Your are invited to our Open House on February 18 at 6:30 p.m. (opportunity
to hear some staff and students speak further about our school, view a video
presentation by students, and truly experience our school through a tour
supported by our student leaders)
• Registration Process (forms to be sent home February 18, 2014 with students
at their current elementary school, forms to be returned by March 3, 2014)
• Students will tour our school with classmates in May or early June
• Members of our school transition team will visit Grade 5 students at their
elementary school to introduce ourselves further (February)
• Transition meetings will happen between staff members of sending and
receiving schools to ensure a successful student move to their designated
school for the following year (to take place before the end of April)
• September Open House “Meet-The-Teacher” BBQ in September 2014, as well
as a fun activity evening just for next year’s grade 6 students to help meet
other staff and students at the school (again supported by our student leaders)
• Unique welcome activity also offered to our Grade 7 students and always
enjoyed
• Staff supervised lunchrooms and a variety of staff supervised noon hour
activities and options available to students each day. It is our expectation
that Grade 6 students remain on school property during the school day,
including over the lunch hour. Written parent/guardian permission will be
required for students to leave the property during the noon hour.
• High expectations of student behaviour in our community at all times
• Grade 6 cluster of classrooms already identified on our third floor and will
be joined by Grade 7’s in the other available classrooms on the same floor
• Grade 6 and 7 students will come to school in the morning of the first day
of school in September, both greeted and supported by student leaders to
help ensure a smooth and positive welcome/transition to our school (other
grades will join us that afternoon)
• Appreciate it’s a concern for some
• Child care is not a service the division provides
• Families need to talk to operators of existing programs
• Parents could establish a program if the need great enough and
there is space, but done independently of the school
• Further child care information can be found on division website
• Busing policy says if you live over 1.6 kilometres walking distance from
your designated school, you qualify for busing
• Busing policy says if you and your daycare/babysitter are over 1.6
kilometres from your designated school and daycare/babysitter is on
existing school bus route, you qualify for busing
• Can consider fee-for-service if on existing route
• No busing for Grade 7 and up unless you live in rural part of the division
Tuesday February 18th, 6:30 p.m.
