Introductions • Welcome grade 5 French Immersion students and their families from Springfield Heights and Sun Valley Elementary Schools • Represents our first opportunity for school information sharing. This is to be followed up with our open house, registration packages, school visits, letters and website information • Division Plan has been on the drawing board since 2001 to make all schools across the division into early, middle and senior years • River East Collegiate (REC) catchment reconfiguration plan moves Grade 6 students into middle years setting and Grade 9 students into REC • The plan is going to free up space in early years schools so the division can comply with 20K3 (no more than 20 kids in k-grade3 classrooms) • • • • • • Curriculum Grade 6 students will receive the same curriculum instruction as they would have received in previous school, as prescribed by Manitoba Education All Grade 6 students get additional options, same as Grade 7s and 8s – Applied Arts (Woods/Manufacturing, Clothing and Textiles, Food and Nutrition, Power and Energy) & Creative Arts (Band or Art) French Immersion programming focused on language learning and cultural experiences (Festival du Voyageur, Music Performances, Theater, French Culture Club) Athletics, Intramurals, Interscholastic Sports Intramural activities are scheduled on a consistent basis at each of the Middle Years Schools in River East Transcona School Division (RETSD) Specific events for Interschool Athletics currently include participation activities for Cross Country (after school meets for grades 6-9 students and one meet that takes place at Birds Hill Park during the school day) Separate participation events take place for Volleyball, Basketball, Badminton and Track. These are currently offered during the school day with each school participating at least once for each sport • Our school follows Middle Years educational philosophy with all of our • • • • grades An emphasis is placed on student engagement, the building of positive relationships, and interest based learning focused on creativity and innovation RETSD Middle Years booklet is available to highlight the underpinnings of our philosophy and practice as it relates to the middle years learner Copies available after today’s information meeting Middle Years booklet can also be accessed on the division website under Community>Publications • Positive Behaviour Intervention School (actively teach students our school • • • • • • behaviour matrix which outlines expectations in all areas at all times) Focus on S.A.I.N.T.S character lessons (Supportive, Aware, Involved, Noble, Trustworthy, and Successful) Promote school spirit through our student house groups that are multi-grade in composition (assemblies and activities) Active Student Leadership Team (dedicated to socially responsible role modelling and a commitment to students helping students) Builder’s Club, focused on service initiatives and community mindedness Participants in “We Day” with activities coordinated to increase local and global awareness of the needs of others Over 40 extra-curricular offerings for students which are staff supported. The goal is to offer something that every student can see themselves interested and involved with Visit our School Website for more information... • Your are invited to our Open House on February 18 at 6:30 p.m. (opportunity to hear some staff and students speak further about our school, view a video presentation by students, and truly experience our school through a tour supported by our student leaders) • Registration Process (forms to be sent home February 18, 2014 with students at their current elementary school, forms to be returned by March 3, 2014) • Students will tour our school with classmates in May or early June • Members of our school transition team will visit Grade 5 students at their elementary school to introduce ourselves further (February) • Transition meetings will happen between staff members of sending and receiving schools to ensure a successful student move to their designated school for the following year (to take place before the end of April) • September Open House “Meet-The-Teacher” BBQ in September 2014, as well as a fun activity evening just for next year’s grade 6 students to help meet other staff and students at the school (again supported by our student leaders) • Unique welcome activity also offered to our Grade 7 students and always enjoyed • Staff supervised lunchrooms and a variety of staff supervised noon hour activities and options available to students each day. It is our expectation that Grade 6 students remain on school property during the school day, including over the lunch hour. Written parent/guardian permission will be required for students to leave the property during the noon hour. • High expectations of student behaviour in our community at all times • Grade 6 cluster of classrooms already identified on our third floor and will be joined by Grade 7’s in the other available classrooms on the same floor • Grade 6 and 7 students will come to school in the morning of the first day of school in September, both greeted and supported by student leaders to help ensure a smooth and positive welcome/transition to our school (other grades will join us that afternoon) • Appreciate it’s a concern for some • Child care is not a service the division provides • Families need to talk to operators of existing programs • Parents could establish a program if the need great enough and there is space, but done independently of the school • Further child care information can be found on division website • Busing policy says if you live over 1.6 kilometres walking distance from your designated school, you qualify for busing • Busing policy says if you and your daycare/babysitter are over 1.6 kilometres from your designated school and daycare/babysitter is on existing school bus route, you qualify for busing • Can consider fee-for-service if on existing route • No busing for Grade 7 and up unless you live in rural part of the division Tuesday February 18th, 6:30 p.m.
