Why ‘Trauma’ needs special
Training ?
• Injuries are common in SL
• Affected are healthy people in productive
age groups
• Handling multi-injured needs special
approach
Who needs special training ?
• Those who are involved in treating injured
- Surgeons
- Doctors- Accident Service / ETU /PCU/ OPD
- Nurses
What have we achieved ?
Primary Trauma Care(PTC)

Started in 2003
Introduced by WFSA
20 trainers were trained
Held in 25 cities across the country
More than 2000 doctors have participated
Regular programmes at NHSL and other
teaching hospitals
Advanced Trauma Resuscitation and
Initial Management course for
Surgeons(ATRIMS)
• Started in 2004
• Conducted by The College of Surgeons of
Sri Lanka
• Held twice a year in Colombo
• Compulsory for Surgical Trainees
Trauma and Disaster Management
Course for nurses
• Three day course held once a month at
NHSL
• Curriculum has been improved since 2005
• More than 50 nurses can participate
• In depth knowledge of trauma and disaster
management.
Nursing Trauma Course
• A committee will be appointed
• Formulate a simple course for nurses
being trained by nurses
• “Training the Trainer” as well

The National Trauma Management
Course (NTMC)
• Developed by IASIC- International College of
Surgeons
• Five surgeons have already participated in India
• Ten surgeons will be leaving for the first ‘train
the trainer’ course next week
• Expected to conduct NTMC throughout the
country by CSSL
Consequences of introducing
trauma courses…
Global changes.....
More and more critically injured
are saved in the initial period...
and they need further care....
