PLACE VALUE

  Standard form: 804,932,008 *Each group of three digits is called a period separated by a comma and is    Word form: eight hundred four million , nine hundred thirty-two thousand , eight *When you get to the comma, say the period *   Expanded form: 8 x 100,000,000 + 4x 4,000,000 + 9x 100,000 + 3 x 10,000 + 2 x 1,000 + 8 *Split up the number using place value. For example, an 8 in the hundred millions place equals 8 x 100,000,000.

• You can line up the numbers to compare • Example:   76,552 Ο 76,852  76, 5 52 76, 8 52 5 < 8 so 76,552 < 76,852

 Examples:   7 17 = 0.7

= 0.017

54 = 0.54
