Ch 12: Human Genetics

Ch 15: Evolution
Ch 9: Energy and Enzymes
• During the 2nd semester students will also
conduct a semester-long research project on
any event, invention, or person in science
history
The Biology Class
• Category 1: Homework
– 25% of the semester grade
– Typically we have 1-2 homework
assignments per unit
– All missing/late homework assignments
may be turned in for ½ credit until the end
of the semester
• So…ITS NEVER TOO LATE!
The Biology Class
• Category 2: Labs
– 20% of the semester grade
– Typically labs are completed in 1-2 periods
– My goal is 3-5 labs per unit and at least one
lab/investigation per week
• The Lab “Re-do”
– Labs are worthless if students do not
understand the purpose behind labs
– Students are allowed to redo any lab for up
to 100% of the grade if they follow these
requirements:
• Lab must be turned in on time and completed
• Student must meet with me before/after
school to discuss the areas they missed
points in
• Lab must be made up within 1 week of
receiving their grade.
The Biology Class
• Category 3: Exams
– 30% of the semester grade
– Each unit will have 1 cumulative exam.
• 2-3 other projects throughout the semester
will also go into this category
• Endangered Species Project, 3D Cell, etc
• Occasionally there will be a short vocab
quiz as well for some of the lengthier units.
– At the beginning of each lecture, I give
students a copy of “learning goals” that
the exam will cover.
– Exams may not be retaken, no notes are
allowed for the exam.
– At the end of each semester, students
may choose to drop one exam grade.
They do not have to if they do not want to.
The Biology EOC
• OSPI requires all sophomore and
biology students to take a Biology
End-of-Course Exam (basically, the
HSPE for bio)
• Students must pass this test once to
graduate
• The exam will be around the first
week of June
• All labs, homework, and exams are
designed to mirror the questions and
topics they will see on this exam
• Last year, CHS: 96% passing
The Biology Class, HodgePodge
• Other grades and lab fees
– Don’t forget to pay the lab fee tonight if you
haven’t already
– Participation grade and final exam will also be
counted at the end of the semester.
• Study Skills
– If your student struggles with how to study, this is
a specialty of mine—not just for science!
• Other Bio classes
– The biology teachers at Camas High have been
working for 4 years to create collaborative final
exams, unit exams, and labs
• All students would receive the same education and
grades as in any other class, and we analyze every
week what works and what doesn’t
