The Miami Intermodal Center
It’s on its way!
In the Beginning…
In the late 1980s
• Miami-Dade County was experiencing significant growth
in outlying western areas
• County Commission sensed urgency in providing
transportation linkage
• Called on FDOT to explore
– East-West Transportation Corridor expansion
– Central facility to link all modes of ground transportation
and decongest airport access roads
MIC History
• Congress adopts Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act
(ISTEA) in 1991 laying groundwork for MIC’s creative financing
• FDOT commissions Parsons Brinckerhoff to conduct East-West
Corridor Study
– FHWA grants FDOT a ROD in September 1998
– FDOT turns project over to Miami-Dade Transit & Miami Dade
Expressway Authority for implementation
• FDOT commissions ICF Kaiser to conduct MIC Study
– FHWA grants FDOT a ROD in May 1998
– Kaiser assets acquired by Earth Tech 2000
– Earth Tech acquired by AECOM 2008
What is the
Miami Intermodal Center Program?
• Transportation hub for Miami-Dade County
& South Florida region
• First program of its kind undertaken by FDOT
• Major partners/stakeholders include

– Miami-Dade County & its transportation
agencies

Why Do We Need the Program?
• Create connectivity in
Miami-Dade County where

• Decongest roads leading to
the county’s number one
economic generator
Connectivity
• Serves as a Central Station similar to
those found in various urban areas in U.S.
• Provides safe & seamless transportation
connections
• Includes numerous roadway
enhancements
Decongestion
• Absorbs rental car & shuttle
bus traffic at airport
• Alleviates traffic tensions on
roadways to & from airport
• Roadway improvements have
enhanced traffic flow on
nearby roads & highways
• MIC has given Le Jeune Road
back to community as a major
north-south artery
