NCOPE’s Mission
NCOPE develops, applies, and assures standards
for orthotic and prosthetic education through
accreditation and approval to promote exemplary
patient care.
History
• 1972 ABC created the Educational
Accreditation Commission (EAC) to meet the
O & P profession’s need for an institutional
accreditation program
• EAC set out to establish criteria to assess and
compare O & P curricula

• 1991 EAC was recognized and became an
independent organization under the National
Office structure
• In December 1999 NCOPE became an
incorporated accreditation agency and totally
independent from the sister O&P
organizations (AAOP, ABC and AOPA).

NCOPE Responsibilities
• Promote education in the field of O & P and raise the
standards of education in the field;
• Develop standards for, and accredit O & P programs;
• Establish accreditation and evaluation procedures in
O & P education;
• Aid the development of new O & P programs;
• Publish an annual report on O & P education
NCOPE & CAAHEP
• The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health
Education Programs (CAAHEP) is the largest
specialized accreditation system in the country.
• CAAHEP reviews and accredits more than 2000
educational programs in twenty-three (23) health
science occupations across the United States and
Canada.

Residency Program Overview
•Residency is second half of an individual’s education and
advancement towards becoming an O & P Professional
•Must register with NCOPE prior to the start of their residency
program
•Items to accompany form:
•Registration form (is on-line)
•Registration fee of $1500.00 per discipline
•Official Transcript for the award of the Bachelor’s or Master’s
in O&P
•Additional $75.00 for On-line tracking (paid to Typhon, Not
NCOPE)

Update on Master’s
• All Programs to transition to Master’s by end of 2012
• NCOPE allowing certificate programs (Northwestern,
Newington, Century and Cal State) to continue to offer
certificates through December 31, 2014 for those
individuals extending credential only.
• NCOPE implementing New residency outcome-based
standards in 2012
New Residency Program Standards
• NCOPE Board adopted new outcome based
residency standards March 2011
– Effective January 1, 2012 for any new program
applying for initial accreditation
– Residents, Directors and Supervisors required to
use the new outcome based evaluation forms for
residents that start a program June 1, 2012 and
beyond

agency must have a certification program that requires formalized O&P education
for orthotists and prosthetists
Addition of 18-month long O&P combined residency (resident cannot receive any
less than 40% in either discipline)

State Licensure
It is the responsibility of the resident to become
familiar with State Licensure Acts prior to accepting a
position in a State with Licensure. Some States have
specific requirements for residents.

Non-Competes
NCOPE’s philosophical position continues to remain the
same regarding non-competes and residency. That is, NCOPE
does not look favorably on the use of non-competes at any
time during residency. However, based upon legal
recommendation, NCOPE cannot ban non competition
agreements, since there is no universal public policy reason
against such an agreement. Residents are employees of, and
receive salary and benefits from their residency program. As
employees, in most states they can be asked to sign valid
non-complete agreements.

System Information
Access Fee of $75.00
The very first time a resident logs in, they are directed to an
online payment page. Access fees must be paid by credit card
(Amex, Visa, MasterCard or Discover)
•First time logging in, residents must set up
defaults i.e., facility name, residency director, etc.
