Facebook in 5 Minutes
Getting Started: Signing up for
Facebook
Who is This For?
This tutorial is for people who do not currently
have a Facebook account.
We will overview the steps required to join
Facebook.
Getting Started
Sign up for a new account at http://facebook.com
Entering Your Information
In order to sign up for
Facebook, you’ll need
to provide your:
First name
Last name
E-mail address (one
that you check
regularly)
Password
Gender
Birth date
Enter the required information, then click “Sign Up” to continue.
The Security Check
You will also have to pass a
security check to prove that
you are a real person – this
is how Facebook prevents
robots from creating
accounts. Do this by entering
the words shown in the
image.
Optional Steps
Facebook will prompt you to add suggested friends that
its algorithms think you may know, find friends based on
your e-mail contacts, enter information about your
education and workplace, and add a profile picture.
Feel free to skip these steps for now, using the “Skip”
link at the bottom of each step. If you would like to add
friends or enter information at this time, follow the
prompts on the page.
The Confirmation E-mail
Facebook will
send you a
confirmation email with a link to
click. If you do
not click this link,
your account will
not be verified,
and your account
functions will be
limited.
You’re on Facebook!
After you click the link in your confirmation e-
mail, you will have an active Facebook
account.
Once your account has been created, you
can start using Facebook’s many features,
including:
Filling out a profile and sharing info about yourself
Adding friends and communicating
Using applications
Uploading and sharing photos and videos
