
For the past three years, 2nd grade teachers
Dawn Kemp and Andrea Segedi have job
shared at Hedke.

Every morning, Mrs. Kemp teaches the Grade
Level Content Expectations which include
guided reading, science and social studies.

The GLCE’s that incorporate writing, speaking
and mathematics are covered by Mrs. Segedi
every afternoon.

Both teachers chose their subjects based on their
strengths and love of the content.

This situation has been a success due to strategic
planning. For example:
Currently at one of the academic learning centers
in the morning (with Mrs. Kemp), children are
“playing” a board game to encourage
memorization of basic multiplication facts. In the
afternoon, students are taught new problem
solving strategies using multiplication (with Mrs.
Segedi).


When parents first encounter a job sharing situation for their
child, they are usually reluctant. However, after they see how it
works, they end up realizing it was an excellent learning
experience for their child. Parents and students were surveyed
during each year of the job sharing arrangement. They have yet
to have a negative response!! Here are some of the comments:
“I thought that having both Mrs. Kemp and Mrs. Segedi was a
wonderful opportunity for my son. He was able to benefit from
both of their strengths. I think my son definitely benefitted by
this experience and I would recommend this job share
experience for other children as well . . . I hope my daughter
gets them for second grade.”

“The teaching skills are different and outstanding.”

“My daughter loves having two teachers.”



“I think that having two teachers is better
because you learn more. I think I have two
teachers because I am special. I love having
two teachers.”
“It is better to have two teachers because you
get smarter and because you have more
people to love you.”
“It is better to have two teachers because if
you are getting sick of one teacher you get
another one soon.”
