Wood Fuel for the Construction Industry Climate Change and Renewable Heat; The Importance of Biomass Use Green Heat www.usegreenheat.co.uk Climate Change The Facts • Climate change is a long-term shift in the climate • Our climate is changing at a rate faster than what we have experienced in all of human history • By burning fossil fuels for electricity and other industries we are releasing billions of tons of carbon dioxide and changing the climate • Carbon dioxide acts like a blanket, trapping the sun’s heat around the planet Climate Change We can reduce our carbon dioxide emissions and slow the rate of change • AES Drax in Yorkshire is a coal-fired power plant emits 22.8 million tonnes ofCO2 annually – more than the 100 least-industrialised nations combined • It provides 7% of Britain’s electrical power • Burning fossil fuels to turn steam turbines and create electricity accounts for a quarter of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, and coal has the highest carbon content of all fuels Policy • The Climate Change (Scotland) Act 2009 sets a target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80% by 2050 • The Act also sets an interim target of a reduction of at least 42% by 2020 Heat Need to decarbonise heat as it accounts for 47% of UK’s carbon dioxide emissions and 60% of average domestic energy bills (Source: Heat and Energy Saving Strategy, DECC (2009) Renewables The Renewables Action Plan identifies options to ensure at least 20% of Scotland's energy comes from renewables by 2020 What is Renewable Heat? • Biomass • Heat Pumps (ground, air or water source) • Waste biomass and anaerobic digestion (including biogas) • Solar heating • Geothermal heat Renewable Heat • Security of energy supply • Maximising economic opportunities – up to half a million additional jobs might be created in the UK renewables sector and its supply chains. Renewable Heat Renewable heat is massively under utilised Why Woodfuel? Economically attractive – how much will it cost to heat an average 3 bedroomed house? Average Annual Cost £4,500.00 £4,000.00 £3,500.00 £3,000.00 £2,500.00 £2,000.00 £1,500.00 £1,000.00 £500.00 £0.00 Renewable Heat Incentive Financial support will: • Increase access to renewable heat • Expand supply chain and market • Help bring down costs CNP Settlements # gal Upp er D erra id na # li n Auch # # Lettoch # Gl asch oi l wn Del li efure Cam eroCottarto ry # # To mvai#ch CNP Sectors (Settlements ) Dru min # # Duth il # # Dul na in # Skye of Cu rr # To mna vou li n # Lyne mor e Bogr oy Car rbri dge # # Dird hu Dal na ha itna ch # Knoc kan dh u # Slug ga n # # Spey brid ge # Ga ich # Con ga sh # Bri dg e Tu ll och grib ba n Hi gh Sloc hd Gl en liv et # Achn ah ann et # # Cro mda le Gl en beg # # Gra ntow n-o n-S pey # Dru mui lli e Cul la chi eNeth#y Br idg eSlie #mor e # # Lettoch # # Del l Lo dg e Lai nch oi l # # # Cha pe ltow n # To min to ul #Fi nd ron # Del na bo # Lag ga nvo uli n # # Avie loc han # Auch go uris h Aund ora ch Gra ni sh # # # # ## # Polc har # # # Stra thd on ide #Waters # Heu ten sto ne gh -heBoul #ad Dal esti e # # Coc k B rid ge # Cor Col na ba ich in # garff # To rna ha ish In chro ry # # # Dal ba llo ch # # Fe shi eb ridg e # # # Baln esp ick # Dal do wn ie # # # To lva h # ean Bail eg ui shAchl # # Rin lo# an # Brae nal oi n 1 # Dal fad Lary # # ##Can da crai g To rbe g Cul sh # Brid ge o f Gai rn # Bush C rath ie # #Ga rvam ore Cra th ie Sher ramo re# # Lag ga n Blar gie # Balg ow an # # # # # # # Mar Lo dg e Muir In vere# y # Lag ga n Dee cas tl e # Ball ater ach # 2 New bi gg ing # Ga ick L od ge # # # Auch all ater # Dal wh inn ie Auch olzi e Lin n of Mui ck Co tta ge # # In chn ab oba rt # Spittal of Gl en mui ck # Gl en lee # In chg run dle # N Gl en dol l Lo dg e #Brae dow ni e # W E Clo va # S Auch ava n 0 10 20 30 40 50 Kilometers # Run tale ave # Din ne t # Ol dh all # Gl asco rrie ## # Alla na qu oic h Brae mar Brid ge o f D ee # # Com ra # #Kinl och Cam bus o ’Ma y Gre yston e Ball ater # # Stra thg irno ck Cra th ie # #Cla cha ntur n Brid gen d # # # Birkh al l In ver # In verg el der Easter Ba lmo ral Lyna be rack Phon es # Ette ridg e # # Dav an # Ord ie In sh # In veru gl ass Dru mgu ish Ruth ven # Kill#ie hu ntly Hil lo ckheBogs ad to n # 3 # King uss ie Fl eu cha ts # Kinc rai g New tonm ore Bial la# id #Main#s of Glen bu cha t Kirkton of Gl en bu cha t Bell ab Fo eg rbe stown Gl en more L od ge Kinr ara Fa rr Dul ax # # # Coyl umb rid ge Dou ne # # Lync hat # # To rran croy To rba in # Bala vil Bade nyo n 4 Badn afra ve # #Blai rna mar row Del avo rar Avie more # # # Boat of Garte n Kinv eac hy Alvi e Cla shn oi r Gl en con gla ss Fo dd erl ette r # #wn Brid ge o f Bro Brid ge o f Ess # Heat Mapping CNP Forestry Support and Advice • • • • • • www.usegreenheat.co.uk www.lowcarboncairngorms.org www.usewoodfuel.co.uk www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/ www.biomassenergycentre.org.uk www.scottishwoodfuelnews.org.uk [email protected]
