Cornell Updates
3-cell re-entrant VT done, see slide.
Cavity quenched at 20MV/m, low Qo ~3e9.
2K leak happened after 3hrs passing λ-point.
New VT insert w/ T-map for multi-cell is ready.
9-cell + new T-map system will be tested soon.

JLab Status: 9-cell Cavities
• Seamless 9-cell cavity EP processing
and instrumented RF testing
– Z164 RF tested with thermometry
• Previously quench limited at 21 MV/m in
Pi-mode after light EP
• Quench location in cell#4 identified
– 20 mm away from equator plane
• Optical inspection at predicted quench
location
– No outstanding geometrical feature at or
near predicted quench location
Z164
• 7 out of 9 cells reached high surface field
of 33-42 MV/m (Pi-mode equivalent)
– Z163 received light EP at JLab and first
RF test is completed
• Cavity reached quench limit with very
little field emission
• Data being analyzed, results to be
compared with the last test at DESY
• Next is thermometry test at JLab

JLab Status: 9-cell Cavities
• Large-grain 9-cell cavity JLAB LG#1 completed
light EP and RF test (following local grinding at
JLab by KEK collaborators and medium
pressure rinsing at ground location)
JLAB LG#1
– First RF test had early field emission onset
– Second RF test after re-HPR
• Reached a highest gradient of > 28 MV/m
• Very high Q0 (> 3E10 at 15-20 MV/m) at 2K
• Field emitter turn on at high field followed by
performance degradation
• To be re-HPR’ed and re-tested
• Low-loss shape cavity ICHIRO8 9-cell cavity
processing and testing on-going at JLab under
JLab/KEK collaboration
ICHIRO8
– Field flatness tuned and light EP done in
December 2011
– KEK visitor Fumiaki Yasuda and Cornell visitor
Fumio Furuta are visiting JLab, working together
with JLab SRF workers
– HPR, clean room assembly, pump down, leak
check, 120C bake-out done
– RF test this week

• Cryogenic radiation instrumentation
– New diodes first test completed
• FIL-UV20 (OSI)
– Data being analyzed
• Dark current Simulations
– ACE3P simulation studies of multipacting in
TESLA cavity HOM can are completed
• Reconfirmed MP barriers previously identified by
earlier workers
• New barriers predicted
• To be verified experimentally
TESLA cavity
With HOM can
– MP studies extended to HOM cans in CEBAF
upgrade 7-cell cavities
– TESLA shape 9-cell cavity model completed
• First test with electron emission from iris done

Fermilab S0 News
• No vertical tests Nov.9 - Jan.18
– VTS and cryogenic system upgrades/maintenance completed
• Two 1-cell cavities were tested Jan.18-19 for basic R&D
• TB9ACC015 was tested yesterday
– Limiting pit was tumbled away, ~18 MV/m -> ~35 MV/m
– Test Oct.27: 35 MV/m with Q0=1E10
•
•
Reaches ILC spec in gradient and Q0, but still high field emission
Cavity was tested with add’l FE instrumentation (Faraday cup) as part of instrumentation development
– Re-test Jan.30: 32 MV/m with Q0=1E10
•
•
•
Re-HPR and re-assembly
FE starting at 13 MV/m, with FE-loading of Q beginning at 20-21 MV/m, and FE-induced quench at 24MV/m.
Some FE processing occurred - cavity finally reached 32MV/m, limited by FE-induced quench
Cavity was tested again with the Faraday cup
