Brief history
The University of Zilina was established on
October 1, 1953 as the University of Railway
Transport in Prague.
In 1959 the institution changed its name to the
University of Transport and moved to
Zilina.
Following wide-ranging changes at the
beginning of the nineties, it was renamed
again to the University of Zilina on
November 20, 1996.

Students choose their field at the end of the second year.
Graduates are granted a diploma in engineering and the
academic degree “Engineer” (MSc.). The study is finished
with a state final examination, and the defense of a diploma
thesis.
The faculty’s internal postgraduate study is a three-year
curriculum (one year of lectures and seminars, two years for
elaboration of a thesis) and is offered in the following fields of
study:

Theory and Construction of Engineering Structures
Technology of Constructions
Forensic Engineering.
Postgraduate study concludes with a doctoral examination
and presentation of a candidate dissertation. Successful
students are granted a doctoral degree (PhD.).
