The U. S. Department of Justice

DOJ’s Mission
“…to enforce the law and defend the
interests of the United States according to
the law; to ensure public safety against
threats foreign and domestic; to provide
federal leadership in preventing and
controlling crime; to seek just punishment
for those guilty of unlawful behavior; and
to ensure fair and impartial administration
of justice for all Americans.”

DOJ’s Organization
• Over 110,000 individuals representing 39
Separate Component Organizations including:
– The U. S. Attorneys which prosecute offenders and
represent the U. S. Government in Court.

Components
• Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)
• Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and
• Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and
Explosives (ATF)
• Which deter and investigate crimes and arrest
criminal suspects

The U. S. Marshals Service (USMS)
Which protects the federal judiciary,
apprehends fugitives, and detains persons
in federal custody.

• The Bureau of Prisons (BOP)
– Which confines convicted offenders
• Federal Prison Industries (FPI)/UNICOR
– (UNICOR is the Trade name for FPI) which trains,
educates, and employs inmates through the
production of a diverse line of products and services
for sale to federal agencies at competitive prices.

• The Office of the Federal Detention
Trustee (OFDT)
– Which provides direction to the USMS and
INS with respect to detention policy and
operations.

• The Office of Justice Programs (OJP)
– Which provides federal leadership in developing the
nation's capacity to prevent and control crime,
improve the criminal and juvenile justice systems,
increase knowledge about crime and related issues,
and assist crime victims.

• The Office of the Inspector General (OIG)
– Which promotes economy, efficiency and
effectiveness within the Department.
• The Justice Management Division (JMD)
– Which provides administrative support to the
Offices, Boards and Divisions of the
Department.
