 Authors use various tools to influence
their audiences:

Formal/informal
Tone
Influence and/or inform
Explicit message vs. Implicit message
 Media carries a message
 Medium (singular form of media) is used
to store or transmit the message
 Media forms include:
 Digital: internet, web sites, cell phone, text
messages
 Visual: TV, Newspapers, magazines
 Audio: radio, TV, film, DVDs, CDs
 Who is the intended Audience?
 What is the level of Formality?
 Is it appropriate for the audience and purpose?
 What is the Tone of the media; is it
appropriate?
 Does the media influence its audience
and/or inform them?
 What is the message?
 Messages can be explicit or implicit
 Explicit messages are specific, clear, and
detailed
 They leave no room for interpretation
 Implicit messages use visuals, body
language, and sounds to communicate
 The meaning must be inferred
 Camera angles: close-ups, multiple
exposures
 Lighting
 Special effects
 Movement
 Graphics
 Shape
 Color
 Music
