Authors use various tools to influence
their audiences:
Formal/informal
Tone
Influence and/or inform
Explicit message vs. Implicit message
Media carries a message
Medium (singular form of media) is used
to store or transmit the message
Media forms include:
Digital: internet, web sites, cell phone, text
messages
Visual: TV, Newspapers, magazines
Audio: radio, TV, film, DVDs, CDs
Who is the intended Audience?
What is the level of Formality?
Is it appropriate for the audience and purpose?
What is the Tone of the media; is it
appropriate?
Does the media influence its audience
and/or inform them?
What is the message?
Messages can be explicit or implicit
Explicit messages are specific, clear, and
detailed
They leave no room for interpretation
Implicit messages use visuals, body
language, and sounds to communicate
The meaning must be inferred
Camera angles: close-ups, multiple
exposures
Lighting
Special effects
Movement
Graphics
Shape
Color
Music
Sound effects: simulate imagined events
