Arriving In Singapore
These are some of the important documents which you will need to ensure that you bring along with you for your
entry to Singapore
and for the
collection of your Training Employment
Pass (TEP) at the Ministry of Manpower (MOM).

Staying on NTU Campus
*16 th June 2008 to 8 th August 2008* During your stay in NTU, you will be living in the Graduate Hall which is located at 50 Nanyang Crescent.
A one month deposit of S$350

is required when checking into the room. This amount is however refundable.
In addition, you need to sign a tenancy agreement for the rental of your room and this will be done on the 2 nd day of the Orientation Programme which is held on the 17 th of June 2008.

(Continued) *16 th June 2008 to 8 th August 2008* Each room, which is not air-conditioned, has an attached bathroom and is furnished with a bed, study table, a chair, ceiling fan, wardrobe, a shoe rack and water heater.
However you need to bring the following items as they are not provided.

(Continued) *16 th June 2008 to 8 th August 2008* There are 3 lobbies in the Graduate Hall and each lobby has its own pantry.
The pantry is furnished with a hot water dispenser, microwave ovens and a common refrigerator.
Cooking however is strictly not allowed.
The pantries are also furnished with washing machines, dryers and ironing boards. The washing machines are complimentary but the dryers are coin operated.

Stipends
Your monthly stipends is S$2,000 which is inclusive of the cost of lodging.
A cheque will be issued to you and the amount which you will be receiving is S$2,000 minus the cost of lodging and other expenses (i.e. accommodation after EASPI program, if applicable.) 12

Transportation Within Campus
Within the campus, there are Shuttles Buses available for you to get around. These buses are free-of-charge and travel around campus in a loop service via three routes:

(Continued) The Operating Time for the Shuttle Buses are from: • Monday to Friday : 8.00 am to 9.00 pm • Saturdays : 8.00 am to 2.00 pm During Public Holidays and on Sundays, the Internal Shuttle Buses will not be in operation.
Please note that the Bus Stops listed under the Routes A, B and C are not in order.

Transportation Outside Campus
• There are two local public transport service buses, namely service numbers 179 and 199 which will take you from the campus to the nearest regional bus interchange, Boon Lay Interchange.
• Once at Boon Lay Interchange, you can select from a wide range of bus services available there or board the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) service to bring you to your destinations. In case you need directions or advice on which service you should take, there are Passenger Service Staff within the interchange who will be more than glad to assist you.

(Continued) • If you’re in a hurry or just in need of a hassle-free transport solution, you can always call or flag down a taxi from wherever you are.
One of the Main Cab Companies is Comfort Cab and City Cab and the Hotlines to call are: 65521111 or 65538888 Cost of Transportation for MRT Trains and Public Buses
Charges for these public transport services vary depending on the mode of transport you’ve chosen. Taking the public buses or MRT services would require you to pay fares via one of two ways:

Be sure to have some loose change on you when you board the public buses to purchase the tickets. In MRT stations, you can buy your ticket at the Ticketing Machines within the stations itself.

2.
EZ-Link fare cards
Introduced for use on the MRT and public buses, it is Singapore's first contactless Multi-purpose Stored Value (MPSV) card.
When you board either public buses or MRTs, all you have to do is tap these specialized cards on the card readers and tap again when you alight. The value on the card will be deducted automatically. It is a lot more convenient than paying cash each time you board these public transport. And not to mention cheaper too! You can purchase EZ-Link cards at the Passenger Service offices in all MRT stations at S$7 a piece and subsequently top-up your EZ-Link cards at the Ticketing Machines when the credit on your card is running low.

If you are uncertain on how much the Fare is based on the Fare Stages, you can simply tell the Bus Driver your destination and he will tell you how much to pay.
However, if you are using the EZ-Link card, then your bus fare will be automatically deducted from your card when you tap your card on the Card Reader before alighting as mentioned in the previous slide.

Cost of Transportation for Taxis
As for taxis, the mode of transaction widely used is cash. Certain taxi companies however do accept credit cards. You can always ask the operator when you’re calling for a taxi or just ask the taxi driver before you get into the taxi if credit cards are accepted. You can also get a copy of Bus Guide 2008, a pocket sized booklet that contains information on all the buses services and the routes each service takes. Within that very booklet, you can also find the route which MRTs take. Bus Guide 2008 is available at all major bookstores and convenience stores.

Banking Facilities In And Near Campus
The only bank on campus is the OCBC bank an account with them. and if you wish, you can open The following documents are needed to open an account in OCBC: • Letter of Award (Issued by NSF) • Passport • Minimum amount of S$500 into the new account (Amount varies among different banks)
Note that a S$2 service fee per month is chargeable if the monthly average balance falls below S$1,000. As such, do remember to bring at least the minimum sum with you should you wish to open an account with the OCBC Bank .
However as your stay in Singapore is relatively short, you may like to check with the Customer Service Counter at OCBC which is located just below Lee Wee Nam Library regarding the opening of new accounts in Singapore.

Weather In Singapore

Lots of Sun!! Daytime, of about 13 hours, is almost constant throughout the year.
The months of June and July are considered to be the hottest months of the year. However, most indoor facilities throughout Singapore and public transportations are fully air-conditioned and so, you don’t have to worry about the heat.

Languages In Singapore
English - Lingua franca of Singapore with a great majority of the population being able to converse in it with a high level of proficiency. • It is also the language of administration. Taxi drivers and customer service personnel use English as their primary language. Road signs and other vital information in public places are displayed in English. • However one must take note that the breed of English used here is based primarily on mainstream British English with a slight influence from American English.

The durian is a pungent smelling but sweet tasting fruit that is indigenous to this particular region. The durian is also notorious for its thorny exterior. It’s an experience not to be missed!

Matriculation Card And Email Accounts
Matriculation Cards or commonly known as Matric Cards will be issued to you by the Graduate Studies Office (GSO).
With this Matric Card, you would have unlimited access to the libraries and other facilities that you can use for both your leisure and for your research.
To collect your Matric Card, you would need to go down to GSO on

Matriculation Card And Email Accounts
(Continued) In order to login in to the NTU’s wireless network, you need to have a NTU User Name and Password. You also need this NTU User Name and Password to access your NTU Emails i.e. [email protected] For this, Centre for IT Services (CITS) will help you to activate a new account and a Letter of Notification regarding the details of the activation of this account will be issued to you.

At The End of The EAPSI Program
At the end of your Research Attachment in NTU, you are required to complete the following: 1.
Submit a written report to your Supervisor 2.
• • Prepare a presentation and present your work at the closing ceremony that will be held on August 8
th 2008
Each Presentation takes about 20 minutes (15 minutes + 5 minutes Q&A) The presentation should cover mainly your research findings as well as your experiential stay in Singapore 45
