ENVIRONMENT & HEALTH
1. Most diseases before Industrial era (like TB, Malaria,
Asthma, plague, dysentery, etc) were known to be caused
by environmental and hygienic factors.
2. With industrialization & Urbanisation, chronic and
psychosomatic ailments became more dominant.
3. Today psychosomatic diseases, ailments that originate in
mind, account for 75 to 80 percent of all the health
problems.
2
ENVIRONMENT & HEALTH
4. The above Scenario reveals the inadequacy of the present
medical view which considers ‘health’ to be merely
freedom from infectious and chronic ailments.
5. Before proceeding to discuses aspects relating Perfect
Health and Environment, a general review of the
prevailing environmental scenario would be helpful.
6. Air and water pollution are today well known to be the
cause of human diseases. However, there are other
environmental effects that constantly affect our physical
and mental well-being.
3
ENVIRONMENT & HEALTH
7. For example, modern buildings are being designed to
be air-tight for efficient air-conditioning. The materials
being used are toxic. The result is that the toxic fumes
are trapped inside and inhaled.
8. This “SICK BUILDING SYNDROME” causes ailments
like allergies, asthma and chronic headaches, and many
other serious ailments.
9. Besides above, town planners and architects are
designing towns and structures that violate Natural Laws,
which adversely affect health and harmony within
families and communities leading to tension, conflict,
and antisocial behaviors.
4
ENVIRONMENT & HEALTH
10. There is also a growing concern about the adverse health
effects of low-level electromagnetic fields resulting from
electric blankets, video display terminals, high voltage
power lines, etc.
11. Over-crowding in these confined environments leads to
psychological problems which spill over into
physical health problems.
12. As population grows, manufacturing base expands and
living standards improve, there is a major increase in the
consumption of energy and use of chemicals in
agriculture and human lives. All this adds up to unhealthy
toxic load in environment and our bodies.
5
ENVIRONMENT & HEALTH
13. The ever accelerating speed of life and pressures of lifestyle, create ever increasing stresses leading to mind,
body, emotional and behavioral imbalances.
14. One can mention a whole lot of other factors contributing
to health problems:
 like the adverse effects of modern medicines and
treatments.
 Iatrogenic diseases (ailments resulting from
incorrect medical treatments).
 The devastation being caused by oxy-radicals
(free radicals), etc.

ENVIRONMENT & HEALTH
15. The above scenario, rather than being considered as a
warning for the arrival of the dooms day, is intended to
bring about an awakened appreciation of the availability
of time- tested and revalidated ancient technologies to
help make timely course corrections to achieve health,
prosperity, peace and harmony globally in our lives and
lives of the succeeding generations.
7
ENVIRONMENT & HEALTH
18. During the day today, we will be touching upon some of
these technologies, with the commitment that we will
be happy to share our knowledge-base with all those
who would wish to do so for Leadership Programmes in
their own Countries.
19. Whilest thanking the UNEP Organisers for the forum
provided to us for our interactions, may I extend my
Compliments to them for having demonstrated their
foresight in making mind-body-soul to be a component of
their Leadership Programme being held in the blissful
environs of Tongji University.
