CO2 Measurement

•
Non-Dispersive Infrared (NDIR)
CO2 molecules absorb light at 4.26 µm
Light source on one end of sensor
IR detector on the other end
Filter eliminates all light except 4.26 µm
Intensity of light reaching detector is related to
CO2 concentration
• Flashing light source
© 2007, TSI Incorporated
CO2 Measurement
• TSI/Airflow instruments measurement uses a
dual detector
– One at 4.26 µm for CO2
– On at a wavelength where no known gas absorbs
light
– The actual measurement looks at the difference
– This helps with stability as the light source
degrades over time

Temperature
• Separate sensor from the temp compensation
sensor
• Why? Because the heat coming off the velocity
sensor impacted the temperature reading
• Platinum RTD

Thermocouples
• On Multi-Function instrument, there are 2 slots
for Type K thermocouples
• Available from TSI
– Air probe
– Surface probe
• Any Type K thermocouple will work
• Much faster response!

Thermocouples
• How they work
• Slightly dissimilar materials
are connected to together
• As temp changes, the
voltage changes
• Voltage is related
to temp and is
measured in device

Standard plugs
Fast response time – small thermal mass
Some are inside enclosures
Type K (Chromel / Alumel)
has a range of -200 °C to +1200 °C range
• Good for many applications
© 2007, TSI Incorporated
Humidity Measurement
• Capacitive humidity sensor
• As humidity changes, it changes the capacity of
the sensor
• This is monitored by electronics
• Raw signal is processed in instrument to get a
reading of humidity
• TSI applies humidity sensors in products – good
understanding of calibration

5.0 Calibration
• For Multi-Function instruments, calibration
certificate is supplied with each probe
• For integral instruments, a calibration certificate
is supplied with each instrument
• Calibration certificates come with all products,
FREE of charge - - Key point of differentiation
© 2007, TSI Incorporated
Field Calibration Important
• Why? Because NDIR and electro-chemical
sensors drift and it helps if they are adjusted
before starting an investigation
• Zero and span
• Instrument walks the user through this process
• User needs tanks of gas and calibration collar
© 2007, TSI Incorporated
Calibration Certificate
• TSI recommends annual FACTORY calibration
© 2007, TSI Incorporated
Calibration Issues
• Many of the parameters can be field calibrated
– In the Calibration menu in the instruments
– Step-by-step instructions how to do it…..take a look
– No “TSI” authorized Calibration Certificate
– Important for some measurements like pressure
and CO2

Applications - Thermocouples
• Surface temperatures of heaters
• Surface temperatures of pipes
• Temperature gradients
– Across the room
– 2 thermocouples
• Fast temperature changes
• Temperature of heated air

% Outside Air Application
• In 7525, 7545, 7565, 7424
– Application Note AF-138 (let’s take a look)
– To calculate the %OA, use the following equation for CO2
or temperature:
%OA = (XR-XS)/(XR-XO) X 100%
Where:
XR = Return air CO2 concentration OR temperature
XS = Supply air CO2 concentration OR temperature
XO = Outdoor air CO2 concentration OR temperature
© 2007, TSI Incorporated
% Outside Air Application
• Inside instrument, there are easy instructions to
follow to get each measurement needed and
then to automatically calculate %Outside Air
• Let’s take a look……….
© 2007, TSI Incorporated
% Outside Air Application
• In the US, there are standards for fresh air to be
brought into certain indoor spaces
• For example, an office needs amount of outdoor,
or fresh, air…
• This is called Air Changes Per Hour (ACPH) of
fresh air and is specified by standards
• With these numbers, and Airflow Instruments,
we can check to see if we have adequate
ventilation
© 2007, TSI Incorporated
% Outside Air Application
• Example:
– Recommended ACPH of fresh air to office: 5
– Size of room = 10 m X 10 m X 3 m = 300 m3
– Flow coming into room – measured at 3600 m3/hr
– Calculating total ACPH =
• 3600 m3/hr / 300 m3 = 12 ACPH
– % Outside Air from 7545 IAQ-Calc = 40%
• 12 ACPH X 40% = 4.8 ACPH of fresh air
