Classes for 200 teachers will be offered in October 2007. ESOL Endorsement Classes You can view and register for classes on INFORM Please encourage your classroom teachers to get the ESOL endorsement. Currently it is free to all Cobb County teachers. The endorsement consists of three courses: Applied Linguistics Culture Methods and Materials FTE and Segments Parameters for ESOL class length and segments: Level Weekly Equivalents Segment Length Amount of allowable segments Grades K – 3 45 minute segments maximum 225 minutes 1 segment daily Grades 4 – 5 50 minute segments maximum 500 minutes 2 segments daily Grades 6 – 12 55 minute segments maximum 1375 minutes 5 segments daily Maximum Elementary School Class Sizes (Class sizes must be in compliance in order to receive state FTE funding) Grade Levels Maximum Individual Class Size K – 3rd no aide 9 K – 3rd with aide 11 4th – 8th no aide 11 4th – 8th with aide 14 An “aide” is someone who is specifically designated to work with the ESOL teacher and ESOL students for the entire ESOL session, not just another person present in the room. Testing Accommodations ESOL Forms These forms are available on-line in the 06-07 Handbook or on the Resources for ESOL Teachers page •Initial referral form: for all students new to Cobb County •Home Language Survey: now incorporated into the registration form •Notice of ELD Program Placement •Parent Waiver of ESOL Services: for parents who do not wish to place their child in the ESOL program. NOTE: these students still must take the ACCESS for the first two years •ESOL progress report: completed every grading period and given to the classroom teacher to be included with the report card •Monitoring forms: for students who have exited the ESOL program within the past two years •Cobb County ESOL Student History •ESOL First Academic Year Deferment Form: for students who are attending school in the US for the first time within the current academic year. This deferment is contingent upon the student taking the ACCESS. Students who arrive after the ACCESS are not eligible for deferment. •LAC (Language Assessment Conference Record): required for students who are exiting the program •ACCESS/W-APT eligibility information •W-APT score sheets Textbooks and Procedures There is a list of materials in the handbook but this is currently being updated. We are moving away from using ESOL-specific consumable materials and instead are trying to get content-based reproducible materials. To order materials please work with the textbook coordinator at your local school. ACCESS for ELLs® stands for Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-to-State for English Language Learners W-APT: WIDA ACCESS Placement Test Overview of the ACCESS for ELLs The ACCESS is a state-mandated English proficiency test given once a year during a testing window that spans from January to March. The ACCESS is a secure test that must be kept under lock and key or in the immediate presence of a certified teacher at all times. This year’s testing window is from January 22 to March 3. All teachers certify on-line (via a short multiple choice quiz) to give the ACCESS. This process will begin in November. ACCESS for ELLs® Overview • • • • Secure, large-scale test Anchored in WIDA’s ELP Standards Assesses academic language Three overlapping tiers for each grade level cluster – Tier A: Proficiency levels 1-3 – Tier B: Proficiency levels 2-4 – Tier C: Proficiency levels 3-5 • One third of test items replaced annually • Administered once per year as required by No Child Left Behind • Indicator of student’s ability to perform on state content test At the given level of English language proficiency, English Language Learners (ELL’s) will process, understand, produce, or use: 5 Bridging 4 Expanding 3 Developing 2 Entering Specific and some technical language of the content areas A variety of sentence lengths of varying linguistic complexity in oral discourse or multiple, related paragraphs Oral or written language with minimal phonological, syntactic, or semantic errors that do not impede the overall meaning of the communication when presented with oral or written connected discourse with occasional visual and graphic support General and some specific language of the content areas A variety of sentence lengths of varying linguistic complexity in oral discourse or multiple, related paragraphs Oral or written language with phonological, syntactic, or semantic errors that may impede the communication but retain much of it’s meaning when presented with oral or written, narrative, or expository descriptions with occasional visual and graphic support General language related to the content areas Phrases or short sentences Oral or written language with phonological, syntactic, or semantic errors that often impede the meaning of the communication when presented with one to multiple-step commands, directions, questions, or a series of statements with visual an graphic support Pictorial or graphic representation of the language of the content areas Words, phrases, or chunks of language when presented with one-step commands, directions, WH-questions, or statements with visual and graphic support Beginning 1 The technical language of the content areas A variety of sentence lengths of varying linguistic complexity in extended oral or written discourse, including stories, essays, or reports Oral or written language approaching comparability to that of English proficient peers when presented with grade level material Tier A is most appropriate for English Language Learners who: □Have arrived in the U.S. or entered school in the U.S. within the current academic school year without previous instruction in English, OR □Currently receive literacy instruction ONLY in their native language, OR □Have recently tested at the lowest level of English language proficiency. Tier B is most appropriate for English Language Learners who: □Have social language proficiency and some, but not extensive, academic language proficiency in English, OR □Have acquired some literacy in English, but have not yet reached grade level literacy. Tier C is most appropriate for English Language Learners who: □Are approaching grade level in literacy and academic language proficiency in the core content areas, OR □Will likely meet the state’s exit criteria for support services by the end of the academic year.
